Hypothetical situation here - unlikely I know but what if??--

Imagine if at some point in the future there are no Brits or Irish on the European Ryder Cup team - let's face it, it could quite easily happen. :D

My question is how would we all feel about supporting Europe in that situation?

Personally I wouldn't give 2 hoots, that's how far my loyalty to the Germans/French/Italians/Swedes/Spanish etc etc would go. In fact dare I say it I could possibly be more loyal to a US team in that situation.

This is my campaign to get the Ryder Cup back to how it should be and how Sam Ryder planned - GB&I (not Europe) v USA.

not a chance of that happening....Ross Fisher Steve Webster Al Forsyth Phil Archer Greame Storm in the team.......by christ we would do well to pick up 8 points in total!!
If these players were strong enough they would have been in on merit before many of the European men but they arent.
If it happened that it was an all continental europe team then I would still have the same interest in the event and the day would never come when I backed USA over anyone!

Interesting comments Dodger, can't quite fathom why so many people are anti-US as opposed to anti-Europe.
Is it David-Goliath syndrome in that USA re the superpower so everyone else is gunning for them.
I realise UK/Irish team might struggle but Poulter/Westwood/Casey/Harrington/Montgomerie/Clarke/McGinley/Wilson/Fischer/Donald/McDowell/Finch etc could make a decent fist of it, couldn't they?

It will never work as the PGA see this as a major revenue source alongside the Open. They would not want to lose the advertising and revenue income by making the matches a watered down version of what now, is arguably the most fiercely contested team event in sport. A US v GB&I event would be too one sided (as it was before) and would lose its appeal after three or four heavy defeats

Pay attention in class!!
If I was your examiner I'd be failing all of you for not reading and then consequently not answering the question.

The question was -
How would we all feel supporting Europe in that situation?

Of all the replies only Dodger answered the question - 2 gold stars for Dodger! :D

Would still support Europe as I think most Americans are jingoistic self inflated egomaniacs who would be fine supporting their team if all goes well but would just become a drunken mess should they beging to lose (especially on home soil)

I find that prospect to be a non event, but from a hypothetical view I wouldnt fel any different. The team represents europe not Britain.

sorry teacher.

yes I would support a 'pure' Euro team but it represents, supposedly, the European Tour NOT the EU (see earlier post - what happens if a Norwegian qualifies?)

Yea I would support them- why not? Whatever ones political stand point on the whole europe situation I am a golf fan and as such if the best golfers in europe were all from the continent I would support them, disregarding any dislike for their countries of birth. It's not their choice where they come from after all.

It's not going to happen though their will always be one top class golfer from GB&I, we have way to many supremely talented youngsters and always will have for it to ever occur.

I'd support the European PLayers from an all Euro team, as that is the tour I watch, also the tour I can identify with even though there is a language barrier, but even though spanish germans, french, sweedish all speak different languages, the outlook has more in common on the golf course with ourselves than we do with our supposed English speaking (I use the tearm loosly) american cousins, who seem at times totally alien.

I love watching the likes of Jiminez, as he is one of my favorite players (other than Darren Clarke) currently from the European tour.

Of course I'd watch a team made up of just Euro players.

Every normal day of the week I think nothing of Europe & yet as soon as golf comes onto the agenda all the barriers with our European neighbiours come down & we root together in a common goal, to bring down a superpower that has gotten too big for its boots is the aim.

Of course I would support yerp. USA is just ugly. I figure if there is no one from Watford in the team, what difference does it make where else in yerp they come from?

I would continue to support a European Team.
As an Irishman I have suuported a European team in the past which did not contain an Irishmen, i remember when Christy O'Connor Jnr was 10th in the table and was overlooked by Jacklin for a wildcard, i was disappointed but still wanted europe to win.

Can you imagine what the results would have been in the mid 1980's if we could not select Seve, Ollie, Langer, Canizares and the other continentals who helped make the Ryder Cup the event it is today.
I do not want to go back to the bad old days of the 1970's when GB&I were thrashed every time.
