nick faldo

actually pound for pound i think faldo was englands greatest sportsman of the 20th century!.
i dont really care if he is/was a nice guy or not.he was a british golfer who actually won multiple majors .

Utter tosh, the greatest English sportsman - you can't compare his achievements with those of Sir Steve Redgrave for example - totally dominated his sport, Faldo didn't do that and certainly not over the same time period.

you're having giraffe mate.

nobody even knows who redgrave is worldwide.i think in the likes of 'rowing' sports that it must be harder not to win a gold medal at the olympics, there are that many catagories.!
if we are bringing in sports like 'rowing' then surely 'phil taylor' the darts player who won his world title 13 times or something ridiculas like that...
my vote still goes with 'faldo' an englishman who was an undisputed best player in the world for a period at a 'top' global sport......
'steve redgrave' im still laughing, what next dame 'paula radcliffe' or 'sir sean curly'?

Mate, you're entitled to your opinions of course, but disrespecting one of the greatest Olympians of all time only serves to make you look like someone who knows next to nothing about sport in general.

im not dissrespecting him..i have no doubt he was good/great at what he does.its just not a populist sport.
worldwide outside rowing circles hes a complete unknown...just like most of the z list olympic sports.
it might not be fair, the likes of 'redgrave' are possibly far more superior athletes than all populist sport heros out there.....but the fact is they are good at their own underground sports.
'redgrave' is of course touted because he is british.i can assure your he is relativley unknown outside rowing/olympic circles.
infact the olympics in general have become pretty sub standard..dont get sucked in with all the hype just because london is the next host city.the average man in general could give a monkies about any of the olympic events.
can you even remember the last ones,or the one before that...where they where ,who won?
the only truely global massive event is 'the world cup'.

You are disrespecting him (and others), you are also patronising him. Being populist does not mean being the best. Look at the tv ratings. Is the x factor the best thing on tv? Or is it just popular? Everybody who understands sport knows about sir steve. You appear to have a lot of facts but no understanding. And therefore you're opinion is irrelevant.

Your average man in the street would be far more familiar with the names of Olympic legends than Golfing major winners.

Your style of writing is starting to feel and sound familiar, I'm sure I'll place you and your alter ego soon enough!

The competition for the 2012 utter pish award is now closed. Nothing will beat this.

Redgrave is known worldwide, not only as one of the greatest Olympians of all time but for his work with the IOC and for his part in bringing the games to England this year (whether you think that is good or not) and for his charitable causes. If we use the analogy of rowing being a minority sport, what about Thorpe from Australia or Spitz fromt he US if you want to go back a few year. Both instantly recognisable fromt heir name alone as huge champions in their field.

Faldo is a multi major winner, Ryder cup record breaker (most appearances, most matches played, most matches won, most points won) and again has done huge amounts to put back into golf with the Faldo series that has enable golfers from around the world to develop under his guidance.

I like his TV commentary. He describes what is going on in a guys swing, why it is or isn't working and why he hit the ball the way he did without getting into too much techno babble. He has an opinion on most subjects and while his sense of humour is still and acquired taste he does a good job as a summariser on the US coverage. Having read a few articles in various golf magazines it does seem that he has gotten his family life sorted (three time married and a famous incident with a spurned lover attacking his car - see still ahead of Woods) and that he has mellowed somewhat. I think there will always be a barrier between himself and the media but every now and again he lets a little of himself out.

I can't see how you can knock either Redgrave or Faldo for what they have achieved during and after their respective careers. Congrats on your sublime and absurd post and congrat on the pish of the year award

not only completely deluded,it appears most of you are paranoid aswell.
anyway gotta go,im sure the 57th gold medal is just about to be handed out at the world archery championships and a 'brit' has managed to win a couple of silvers....its on eurosport i think?.

Paranoid = a mental condition in which one mistakenly believes that one is being persecuted. Not me

I can't see the comparison between a golfer who topped his profession and an amateur in a sport with negligible funding who is proud to represent their country and trying to do the best they can. I think you are missing the point at best. Clearly there is no way you'll change your (strange) entrenched opinion and thats fair enough but I think you'll factuely incorrect and mis-guided

Having had a quick skim read of the pages since my last post...

Two points come to mind...

Point One...

I am glad that I have old fashioned values and try and stick to the old adage of... If I can't find something good to say about somebody... Then what I have to say is best left unsaid... Bit boring but there you go...

Point Two...

Top English sportsman of the 20th century? I'd possibly look no further than Ian Botham... If for no other reason than that he gets up every Aussies left nostril ;):o...

I hate anyone who hates Faldo.

Wait a minute, I mean: I hate anyone who loves him.

Or, I love anyone who hates him.

Hang on , I think Ive got it now: I hate anyone that Faldo loves to hate.

Anyway, it's one of these and I will be very insulting to anyone who dissagrees with me. Or, will I disagree with anyone who insults me.

I'll get me coat.

On the original post I thought he was a great player in his day, but doesn't seem to have taken to commentating very well. Another comparison would be Monty, how bad is his commentary work !! Luckily I haven't seem him on tv for a while.
