Played the 18 holer at Braemar this afternoon. On hols for a week and it was 17 degrees which is pretty unheard of up here this time of year! Autumn colours are great this year, course deserted, hit it great for a 2 over par 66 from the yellows. Lovely Wednesday afternoon's golf......bring on retirement!
Highly recommend it to anyone passing by. Short season though, will be closed by end October. I love it, charming wee course.
Here a few pics which frankly dont do it justice - (I am the golfer..allegedly!)
The 2 ladies in the 2nd photo (18th) were on the 9th when me and the father in law started. They couldn't believe we caught them up by 18, it took them 4.5 hours with nobody near them. Mind you they were beginners and we counted one of them taking 9 on that wee par 3 18th (playing 108 yards according to my SG2.5) which I hit with wedge to 8' and then holed the putt for a 2up win
Great pic there Birdieman. It certainly looks like you have a very nice afternoon to play there. last time I was there we got eaten alive by midges as there was a fair bit of "soft" ground around and there was no breeze that afternoon. Is it still the highest Course In the UK ?
Walked over it from the old youth hostel in the past and there was about 10" of snow on the course, but that was in the winter, when we had proper winters!
PIC1
2nd hole - very tough par 4 because the green is elevated about 40 yards above the fairway level usually into a headwind. 2nd shot distance suggests a 5 iron, play 3 wood...trust me.
PIC2
18th - short par 3 to elevated green, can play havoc with shot selection when there's a wind about, 2 tier green can make putting tricky too.
PIC3
13th downhill par 3 plays about a 6 iron. One of my favourite par 3's anywhere, photo doesn't capture it. Fabulous view towards Braemar.
PIC4
Par 3 3rd hole, a classic, very hard green to hold, really tough off the medals with the wind normally coming off the right. Another favourite hole. Plays 7 or 8 off the yellows, 5 iron off the back. Back tier flag is tough.
PIC5
Looking back up the 1st hole to the clubhouse. Straightforward par 4 if you can nail the drive.
PIC6
Nice view of the 6th green among the birches from the 5th fairway.
DCB I do believe it's the highest 18 hole course in the UK, not enough altitude to make the ball go further though!
Lovely day on the course, cool but not cold and a few sunny breaks. Sadly the golf was a mess. Erratic is one word! A good hole followed by a shocker in equal measures. Some decent shots but some crap too. Good to be out as I love the colours on the course this time of year and I had it to myself this afternoon
I love the Braemar course, feel for it during a school outing. Been back a few times since and always enjoy it.
I like the little par 3 (6th?) which runs next to the Glenshee road.
Another I like is the 15th, i think. You driver back toward Braemar over heather and a burn to the fairway before playing to a green that is just over the same burn to the left.
That looks like the track that is on the left as you come in...I passed it on my way to do the Braemar 10k back in the day I was an athlete and it looked very nice.
