Another day killing time in Newcastle!
I will admit that I booked this last night for £15 and had absolutely zero expectations - I went cheap incase I had to leave the course early. Normally, knowing I had time, I would have booked a "better" course.
I turned in at 8 this morning to find s mostly deserted car park and a municipal looking club house with boarded up bits (it's not in the best part of toon). I was met by the friendly pro who equipped me with everything I needed to find my way around. He told me no mats - yay. I then discovered you had to carry your own rake for the bunkers as a trade off (did I mention it was in a rough bit of toon?)
Well, the place was shocking! It really shocked me just how good the condition of the fairways were and the bunkers looked well maintained (thankfully didn't go in a single one but brought the rake for company). I duly arrived at the first green and three putted spectacularly thanks to the green. This happened on a further 4 occasions on the front nine. I could not compute how they were so fast and true in November (best comparison was Goswick the day after their open in July!). I had a great chat with the head keeper who told me there were only 3 of them at the moment working flat out. The place was an amazing credit to them
Considering I have played 3 "away" course as well as my own over the past month they should all hang their heads in shame. This is an underrated cracker of a course, I would even say I much prefer it to the loftier "The Northumberland" which I would consider it's closest comparison!
Well worth a trip to play a massively underrated course. Hats off to them
