Hi all,

I posted a few weeks ago about starting a 4 week beginners golf training course. I have now finished and really enjoyed it. I started with the 7 iron then driver and finished with some chipping and putting.

I would like to try playing on a course but am probably nowhere near good enough yet. What is the usual progression for a beginner? I dont know anybody else that plays so cannot just go out with a group of better players. Do people generally mind somebody going around on their own? I fully expect to be hitting it into the trees etc. so may take some time. I was planning on going when it will be quiet but dont want to annoy everyone by being slow and rubbish.

What were other peoples experiences of playing on the course the first few times? The first tee is outside the bar so is a bit intimidating. I am managing to hit it to the back fence on the range and most of them go pretty straight but I just know that one won't.:o

Don't worry about going out on your own, I do often if nobody else is around.

Your best bet would be to find a par 3 pitch and putt type place and have a couple of games.

Don't worry about teeing off in front of people, most of us have all shnkanknked or topped one off the tee, if you do play on a full size course, just be polite and let people play through, people may even invite you to join them?

It is a game after all and we all have to start somewhere

Just get out there. Jump in with both feet. Faint heart and all that. We all had to learn (I'm still learning). But above all else enjoy yourself. Thats what its all about really.

In the same boat , had lessons , now i go to the local pitch and putt to practice , all the holes are short though , longest is 128 yrds , have just found a nine hole near me thats a par three the shortest is 129 yrds and the longest 215 yards , this shall be my new stomping ground , i go out on my own all the time , if your slowing people down then let them play through , no drama , havent met anyone with a bad attitude yet , allthough im built like a tank so maybe there just terrified to say owt , also i watch people play the public course near my work out of the window and some are truly dreadful so you wouldnt be alone if you smashed a few wild ones or duffed a few or thinned some or whatever

There's a chap on here called Homer, he plays at Ascot, drop him a PM and I'm sure he'll take you under his wing.

That's a very cruel way to welcome someone to the forum. :ears:

P.S. cirrusjock - Welcome to the forum. I started playing last September and often go out on my own to local 9 holes. It's definately the way to 'ease' yourself in. But don't feel intimidated by a full 18 hole after you've got used to playing.

the only reason i havent played an 18 hole full course yet is that in my mind im going to shoot under a hundred and dont want my fantasy spoiled by the fact that i`ll probably be lucky to break 110 even 120 , cant put it off much longer though lol

Just get out there and have a go. No amount of practise can make up for being out on the course and hitting the ball.

Welcome Jock. I would just get out there and have a go on a course if I were you. You've had your lessons now go out and put them to the test and above all else ENJOY YOURSELF!.
There's plenty of time for frustration and personal dejection once you've been playing a while and it all goes south.
