Have recently joined the forum and am enjoying the banter on here. However, sorry if I'm being a bit dense but keep seeing the phrase 'buffer' on a few threads - does this mean shooting par or better or something else?

If you shoot a score better than handicap (ignoring css for the moment) you get a cut. If you shoot handicap, then you will buffer, and neither go up or down. There is a buffer zone of 1 shot for category 1 handicaps, 2 for cat 2, 3 for cat 3 etc, so you can be this number over your handicap and still not go up. Shoot outside this buffer, and you go up 0.1.
