not in their interest to try to prove, for example, Titleist 690mb are just as good as the new Titleist blades just out, because if they were as good no one would buy new clubs therefore manufacturers wouldn't advertise therefore no advertising revenue for magazine therefore no magazine and probably no forum...heck what would we do??

Just don't go there!!

One of the golf mags did something similar a long time ago. Actually got Titleist to remake some 'new' early 80s balls (maybe even 70s, can't remember). They tried new balls, new clubs, and old balls, old clubs, in all combinations. If I remember correctly, the new balls were best with the new clubs, and the old balls were best with the old clubs. The longest combo was obviously the present stuff though.
