Having competed in other sports, I recently decided to take up golf, mainly for the challenge. I am having lessons with the pro at my nearest club and I am making progress. I have been losing balls on the par 3 Academy course and I have a couple of acquaintances that have offered me the opportunity to lose more balls at their clubs, playing 18 holes, as soon as I can hit the ball off the tee. I am now trying to decide which of my local clubs to join. I want to play 2-3 times a week, but how do I find people to play with? What else should I know?

You're doing everything right at the moment. Just try to enjoy yourself first. Everything else is a distant second.

Where are you based? There will always be a meet being organised on here somewhere relatively local. Decent courses, good people, no skill limits (fortunately). Dive in and enjoy the forum...

Welcome to a world of despair and frustration laced occasionally with elation, hope and optimism - and that's just the forum :D

If you're joining a club on your own, tell them that when you join and they *should* help you to meet new members. Despite reports to the contrary, most golf clubs are welcoming places, any that aren't aren't worth joining.

As Bluewolf says, there are also many friendly people on here and there are always local meets going on if you check the Arrange a game section.

Have fun

Thank you for your helpful posts. I am based in Rutland and there are plenty of clubs around.

Enjoy Franco, once you get the golf bug its hard to let go :)

When you are enquiring to clubs regarding membership, mentioned your concerns to them. Clubs have different ways of integrating new members (some dont bother) I know ours has new member nights where new members can meet up for a game, and get soem food afterwards. These are supported by long standing members also so new members are made to feel welcome by all.

hello and welcome along enjoy. :)
You have set out well From the start, play the couple of rounds with your acquaintances see if you enjoy the courses and go from
There. Check out any other local courses, once you join you'll soon get to meet lots of new playing partners.

Welcome. Congratulations for starting off the right way. When you feel confident enough to venture out for 18 holes with mates just concentrate on hitting the ball straight. Don't worry about distance: try to keep up at their pace even if that means picking up and chipping on at the green.
PS You couldn't be any worse than the hackers on a golf society jolly that we had the 'pleasure' of following today!

Fairly certain that there are a couple of forumers who are local to you. Plenty of Forum days organised nearby as well. Enjoy your golf and keep us updated on your progress..

I joined my club on my own and just put my self out there. Very daunting at first especially when your not very good. I started by just turning up speaking with the pro and playing with anyone who would have me. I was never turned down and met some really nice people and got plenty of help and advice. After a year I met up with the guys who I've now been playing with for two years.

They're quite a few of us around your way, I'm not that far away if you fancy a round.

Welcome on board. I'm taking a mate for his first proper 18 on Sunday. He joined Epsom GC and their academy and has had lessons at World Of Golf near the A3 and so he is ready. I think he has the bug big time and he's going to be hard to reign in and understand what a frustrating but rewarding game it can be
