Hi
First post, have taken up golf age 52, went along with a work society to a course first to see if it was for me, had a great day scored 140 but did get bogey on a par 5, now I'm totally hooked. Would lessons be my first step and any tips

Welcome aboard.

Never too late to take the game up. Totally addictive in spite of it's pitfalls (expense, depression, bad weather, divorce......are some of the attractions)

IMHO yes lessons are the way to go. Book a group of 4 or 8 lessons from your pro (consecutive weeks) and you won't look back. It'll make the game much more fun for you.

Enjoy.

Hi Thommo and welcome.

No doubt you'll get lots of suggestions.

When I started out I had a block of lessons to begin with. Didn't even have any clubs. Just tried it out first. The pro I used seemed to concentrate on grip, alignment and stance. Went in depth with the backswing. Unfortunately he had the plan that if he drag it all out I'd book another block of 5 lessons to continue and cover the downswing, impact and finish.
Didn't bother and went elsewhere. The moral.....pick your pro carefully. Take recommendations from golfing friends.

You ought to be looking for a good pro who teaches simple golf (doesn't get hung up with the technical stuff) You just need someone to get you started correctly.

I'd definitely recommend the use of a pro, otherwise you'll pick up bad habits which are hard to break. See how your swing goes then decide the options from there on. A good pro will get to know your swing, speed etc and be in a great position to advise on clubs which suit you.

Welcome Sir to the forum and the wonderful world of golf(sometimes)

Lessons are the very best thing you can do before you start to teach your body a load of bad habits. as my friend above said, find a pro that is good for you. Book a block and work on the range when your not having a lesson. I learned alot more after my lesson than in my lesson as I had time to take it all in and do it in my own time.

This is something you will have to work on hard, most will not just pick it up. If I were you I would set yourself a long target with a time frame and work load plan.

This is a great forum and can help you with alot of aspects of the game. Look forward to seeing you again with a progress report.

Good luck

Alex

Tip :

Relax

Swing

Walk

Give it another belt.

:D

Get the basics right - the grip is vital.

Then relax and forget about technique whilst making sure that you hit all the 18 correct points on your backswing, you then start the transition with a downwards movement of teh left hip whilst ensuring your head stays still and you don't dip. ( Advanced students can also ensure the reverse 'C' they form is a capital C, not a lower case 'c' )

Then you can start thinking about the 6 correct downswing ( pre impact ) thoughts and motions, which will then naturally take you through the 2 impact thoughts and 3 impact positions simultaniously, so then you only have the final 18 contra followthrough positions to mirror your backswing, to ensure you finish with a nice, high balanced, followthrough.

52!! You're far too old. You'll get to the fourth tee and need a wee. That's unacceptable. You must be able to control your bladder until at least the sixth!!

You also probably drive a Volvo. No golf club looks good with a Volvo parked outside.

Try bowls. You'll be the youth policy there.... ;)

Only joking pal. Welcome to the game and welcome to the forum.

Im only 35 and have one........

Oh and Hello Tommo ;)

Welcome aboard. Lessons and the right pro are important. If you go to the range try to find one with targets you can aim at. I've improved a lot since I've stopped going to the range and used the practice hole on our course instead.
