Well after nearly 8 months of no golf due to a injury at work i have finally started to play again and also bit the bullet and become a mamber of a course as well ( Aylesbury vale, stewkley ). I have only played a couple of rounds but noticed the massive step backwards in my game due to the lack of play. has anyone any advice for someone in my position should i get as much course time as i can or should i do alot of range time.

I'm also getting back into it after a year's lay off due to illness.

From my experience so far I'd say you need a bit of everything. You need to hit balls to get your swing going but you also need to be on the course to get your touch and feel round the greens and your eye for a shot back. I have found that so far it is the short game which is taking longer to come back. There's also big difference between hitting on the range and being on the tee of a tight par 4 or with a 175 approach to a small well guarded green. That does suddenly remind you what the game is all about.

I'd also recommend a couple of lessons to make sure your basics are ok.

Hope that helps. Best of luck.

cheers for replies, yes it is my short game that has suffered most ( not that it was that great anyway ), but oddly the layoff has helped my drive which is alot straighter and as a result longer.

I think i will get myself in for some lessons

Hi john

am also a member at AVGC.

A lesson or two and some range time would be my recommendation. As I understand it there is a new teaching pro about to come to the club, should be there in the next 2 weeks or so.

Short game wise, its far easier to practise out on the course at the moment, at least when the course is quiet it is.

If you want a game or even just to practise Im up there a fair bit at the moment (I need to be after todays abomination of a medal round), drop us a message

Most pros tend to offer discounts on blocks of lessons and if you have a new pro coming soon I'm sure he'll want to get business as soon as he can so he should be open to negotiations over the size and cost of a general all-round refresher package
