I know the grain has an effect, in some countries more than others because of the type of grass. But what exactly is a compass going to tell me? I can see the direction of my putt and I can see the direction of the grain. Knowing that the grain is going NNE is totally Irrelevent and useless information. The same applies to wind. I can throw a bit of grass up to find out which way it is blowing in relation to my shot, knowing it is SSW is not going to help one little bit.
If you can find me one person who has ever stood on a golf course over a putt and thought about the actual direction of the grain or wind in relation to magnetic north, and furthermore, actually thinks knowing that information is useful, I might change my view, but until then, it's nonsense.
