New Member looking for some advice

Hi everyone!

I've just joined the forum and was wondering if some of you seasoned experts would be able to give me some advice. I've recently started playing some golf and I think I'm hooked. I try and get down to the local 9 hole at least three times a week(still a bit scared to try the full 18). At the moment I'm play with some pretty old clubs a neighbour gave me. They're a set of wilson staff blades (I think they're pretty old, they say Hale Irwin on the side).

My question is whether I would be better to buy myself a new package set of clubs or not. I'm a student so would have a limited budget of around £200.

Also I think I should probably invest in some lessons. Would love to know what you guys think.

welcome. three times a week, yes you're in for life.

lessons, definitely (possibly with a group to spread the cost, though it may be slower going that way).

clubs, talk to the pro, they may do for now.
most on here will suggest a half set (though personally I've never seen one!) or a good secondhand set for starters.

Lessons are a great idea. Spending a lot of money on new clubs is not at this stage, but a decent second hand set, maybe.

The Hale Irwins are, like Hale Irwin himself, well past it now.

If your new to the game then blades aint really going to help you play well, especially old ones. Then again you might be a natural ball striker.

AS suggested, speak to a local pro and ask him for advice, if you get lessons from him, he's sure to know what will suit you.

I would suggest a good second hand set, there are plenty of bargains to be had, just dont rush into anything untill your happy.

I would go for a cheap package set like:

Everything you need for starters and you will be able to sell on ebay and get most of your money back, when you are ready to progress to a better set.

If you are keen enough to buy a set of clubs you can find any number of kits on offer through many of the retailers on the net, like jjb/directgolf and many others. You can often see sets of irons for £60 or so and often very good names selling full starter kits from £60 to £300 range. Do this and then use the rest of your 200 quid for a few lessons with a pro.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll go and enquire about lessons tomorrow and see what the pro says about the clubs.

At the moment I'm usually scoring between 31-35 on a par 3 nine hole.

Hi I am new to this myself (forum). I would say to you try not initially to spend to much on lessons. Get a second hand set of clubs cavity back not the blades you play with.
Try stick more with a three/four wood more than a driver at first then see how you go.If you have played any ball sports already to a reasonable standard you should do okay and then review your equipment etc after say a year.

Lessons all the way to start with. Start with a blank canvass and avoid the in built faults many of us on here carry round. If you are looking for a new set, cavity backs are what I'd suggest to help you get the ball in the air and with maximum forgiveness. Have a chat with your pro and see if he recommends a full set or not. My advice is to avoid the starter sets at JJB etc unless money is the overriding factor. They aren't necessarily the best made sets in the world and once you have lessons and improve you'll find yourself wanting something a bit more responsive. If money is an issue, check out e-bay (watch out for fakes) or the local ads. If you want advice on any potential purchase you'll get it in spades on here.

Hi, i picked up a great starter set from my local driving range although you can get the same set on a number of golf sites. I paid around £200 for a set of Wilson X31`s which included bag, driver etc.. Superb first set.

Ok, so I'm going to go book some lessons tomorrow. Just looked at the club's website and the lessons cost £18 for half an hour. Is that about average? What can I expect in my first lesson? Will I just use my own old clubs?

Take everything with you and explain to the pro what you need. £18 is average, depending on where you live
