hi all
Currently been in my place of work for 2 1/2 years, and never been really happy so was always looking for something else, this was always a stop gap after Michelin closed.
Anyway, around a year back i applied for the civil service, eventually got an assessment a few weeks back and passed all the selection criteria, so i am now on the merit list for a job with them, but there is no time scale so as yet i do not have a start date etc.
At the time of applying my notice period was 1 week, as i am now over 2 years, it is 4 weeks.
i know i need to wait til i get a start dateto resign, should i speak to my boss about my intention to leave?

thanks

james

No, no and no. Say nothing, hint at nothing. They may be due to lay off staff and you go from the back of the queue to the front. You then may not start your new job for another 6 months.

Sit tight. You may find that when it comes to it that your company does not want you to work your notice anyway.

I'd say absolutely not.

Very few employers wouldn't wait 4 weeks for a new employee to join them after offering them a position, especially the civil service I'd say. Also, if the offer doesnt come for a fair period going to the current job is going to be very trying I'd think. If when you hand your notice in the current employer is willing to let you go early and the new one to start early then it can all be sorted then.

Good luck!

thanks Chris
in my head im thinking the same, but just wanted to get it out there for an opinion as i am limited on who i can tell, other than the wife!
thanks

Not sure how it works now but I passed that very assessment way back in 1997 and never heard a thing back. In those days certainly, passing the assessment did not mean a job in the future, just that you would be in line to be considered for suitable roles going forward.

Should definitely keep my mouth closed then GB!
It states all candidates that passed will be offered a role in due course, my access NI check has been cleared also, but it is a waiting game i guess.

I'd say just tell the boss now, get that 4 week countdown timer started! I'll refresh this page in a few minutes to hear what they said.........

Say nothing......do nothing to jeopardise current income!

I am contracting in a Civil Service org currently, they will fully understand you have to give notice in current role. Four weeks is the norm.

Keep your eyes on THIS , you may spot something before they call you! Quite a lot on there in N Ireland currently.

Do nothing until you have got a written offer of an actual job - until then, you dont have a new job to go to. And in any case, the civil service (like local government) will not bat an eyelid if someone has a 4 week notice period in their existing job. Its not out of the ordinary at all.

4 weeks is probably the most common notice period and one the vast majority of employers would excpect until you get up into some management positions then 3 months or more can be excpected. Again, anyone employing into these positions should fully expect and understand that.

In your situation I would say nothing until you have signed and returned a contract, then the employer has confirmed they've accepted it.
