I was at my local golf shop earlier having a look while the little one was having her lesson only to find that it has been taken over by a new couple. I was having a chat to them and all sounds good they is going to be alot more choice now rather than just wilson, ping and callaway as it was and they have even got callaway coming down on wednesday night for a demo day.

I was talking to them about new irons as this is the one thing i could really use and they came up with an interesting suggestion. Instead of just buying a whole new set which i wouldnt be able to afford for a good while i could just buy them individually and build up a new set over time which would make alot more sense to me money wise and with xmas coming up i reckon i could get most of my most used irons this side of xmas and make the rest up after xmas.

Has anybody done it this way and do you think it would be a good way to go as i would be playing with 2 different types of irons for a while?

I would much rather buy a good quality second hand set than faf about buying an iron a month or so. Check out second hand deals as there are some great buys to be had, especially after Christmas, so many golfers get new kit at this time of year.Second hand doesn't have to be second best.

i think that, that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. what if you had an accident that stopped you playing golf? you've bought half the set and who is going to take them off your hands without you loosing a considerale amount of money.
just wait till you have a good amount of dosh to play with.

I agree. I've bought 2nd hand irons for very little over the years. Last set were £140, before that £149 (new, discounted), £120, £200 and about £80......that's near on eight (?) years of golfing.....maybe if I bought a new set for £500, I'd keep them longer (I don't know!?) :)

I know Ping amongst others price their clubs per iron which I guess is aimed at those who'd rather not have say the 3 and 4 iron or the SW (many preferring hybrids and their own choice of wedge) so I can see the logic but agree that buying month by month seems a poor way of doing things.

As an option many new models for 2010 have/will be released soon as so with some work you should find some pretty good deals on current makes if you want new instead of 2nd hand. Nothing wrong with 2nd hand and at the end of the day as long as you have a set you can use what does it matter where it came from.

I really don't see what's wrong with Timh27's idea of buying his clubs individually if it suits his budget. And as mentioned, he will get a fair few for Xmas anyway.
I certainly don't think it's a stupid idea either.

Do what ever suits you best

surely this is just going to work out a more expensive method.
look around and you'll find a discount on just about any set but on individual irons?
can't see how it will help the retailer either (they won't want to be stuck with an unsaleable part set) unless you are agreeing to buy the whole set by instalments.

Thanks for the advice. I think you are probaly right it is better to wait until i can get a full set. It just sounded a strange suggestion and i wondered if it would work and how common it is. I was thinking of getting them in 2 lots 5,7,9 before xmas and 6 and 8 after xmas but i'm still a long way from making a decision. I still fancy the benross irons but am looking at the mizuno mx-19's and the cheaper wilsons. I am unsure wether to get a 4 iron as when i hit it well which is rare it goes about the same distance as my 5 wood which i tend to use alot more often and i'm not sure wether to get 2 hybirds or have 3 wedges so i still have alot of trying out and thinking to do.
