Hi Fellas,

I'm possibly looking to buy some new irons and wouldn't mind a bit of advice please.

I'm currently a 22 handicapper, although as I rarely play in competitions this is unlikely to come down any time soon.

However I'd say my actual game is more like that of a 16 - 18 handicapper.
I have good ball striking with my irons, can putt well, driving is hit and miss at times but in the main it's decent (although it's straight more than long).

I think it's my pitching and chipping that would stop me playing to better than about 16 - 18, although I am going to have a lesson on this soon.

I currently use TaylorMade RAC OS II irons and love these, but they are getting a but old now and could probably do with updating.

What irons would you recommend I look at ?

Obviously I know there is nothing like trying out a few sets on the range and deciding what I get on with best, but ideally I'd like to narrow my choice down to 4 or 5 first then try these out.

Hi
I would consider sticking with your current irons if you are striking these well. It sounds like there are other areas of your game which require more attention, so your money may be better spent on lessons?

If you do get down to around 16hcp, the world is your lobster as far as irons go. You'll need to decide whether you want more forgiveness or workability as there is usually a trade off. A few people on here use the Mizuno MX200, which is meant to be a great compromise between forgiveness and control. Mizuno claim that there are a few touring pros using them.

However if you are a consistently good ball striker, you may prefer something in the better player end of irons.

Are you a member of a club? If so you could ask your pro if you could try out a few different types of irons and see which kind suits your game.

Go to an AG (or other large retailer unless your pro has a good selection in which case try him first) and try as many sets as you can with a open mind. There are so many clubs for the mid-handicappr now that its hard to give a definite (unbiased) opinion. Iron makes I dislike (Titleist or Cleveland) may be exactly what you're looking for.

My advice would be to go to an AG with a range so you can actually see the shots and not rely on a computer (and an untrained sales assistant) to provide you with the data. I'd also look at investing i a short game lesson if its just that area of the game holding you back. If you can make a few chip and putts it will make a difference to your scores.

First of all , hullo jonny, and what is your motive for buying a new set of golf clubs?

Reason I ask is with your h/c and frequency of play, I can only think of two reasons I would change under your circumstances. 1)Clubs worn out. 2)Got the dosh and fancy a new set to look at.

You already have a decent set of clubs there and unless they are worn out, I can't see a good reason for change.

If you have the money to blow, then get the set you have replaced with the same if poss, or the nearest model to them. You dont play often enough by your own admission to benefit in any real way other than pleasing to the eye, no matter what you choose. ;)

hmmm Ive got a set of titleist 775s and theyre good (not looking to sell by the way) lol. If youre a good ball striker then theyd be an option - theyre getting cheaper aswell. You can work them too. R7 irons are cheapish now and there easy enough to hit so have a look at them. :D
