When you play a new course what makes it for you what do you most look forward to when you tee it up on the first for the first time???

For me it is the condirion of the greens.

Whats yours???

Does it have any history, condition of the greens also ,scenery ,is it a scenic course,i always do a bit of research first for any info before i go.

Have been looking tonight at some course up in the North of Scotland that i'd like to play ,looked at Moray (any one played it before ),thinking about there 36 hole open its £30.

I probably base alot of the judgement of any new course on the condition of the greens but the thing I look forward to is working out a new challenge and trying to post a score round a new place.

Not interested in playing new places off normal tees, I want the medal tees or even better the big boys tees if they have them. Pointless playing anywhere if the greens are not upto half decent standard as alot of places just become unplayable.

I think it has to have decent greens. I've played some wonderfully scenic courses (mainly parkland) and they've putted like a ploughed field. No view int he world will compensate for the frustration of not being able to put the ball in the hole if it bobbles 4 inches offline from 3 feet.

I'm off to Sand Martins tomorrow for the first itme in a long while and allegedly the greens and bunkers have all been redone since last Autumn so quite excited

Green conditioning is right up there. Otherwise, tend to appreciate interesting holes that make me think a little (which is too much, to be sure). Always appreciate green complexes that pose multiple options for pitches, chips, etc...

And scenery, naturally.

Hate playing new courses that are made up of row upon row of staked trees and marker posts. Much prefer older, more established courses with plenty of trees and a bit of "history" to them.
Whenever I am going to play a new course I will read up as many reviews on it as I can.... preferably from people that have paid good money to play there rather than a magazine journo who has been given a free days golf with some food/freebies thrown in to give a glowing report on what would otherwise be described as a goat track. If the course gets bad reviews then I am normally on a "downer" before I arrive and will tend to play the course badly...

I'm quite surprised how many people think the greens are the biggest priority. OK, nobody wants to putt on rubbish but so long as they are reasonably true things like pace and being "manicured" are less important to me. I look for the lie of the land, the views, the variety of holes as being the main considerations. Played a course on the West coast of Scotland last year (Traigh). 9 hole, greens not that brilliant but a beautiful day and views over to Rhum and Skye. One of the best days golf I've ever had. Truly memorable day and maybe golf as it was meant to be.

I'd put hole design first (as long as the greens are fair-good). Nothing worse than starting with 2 or 3 straight-ahead par 4s.

My course is not that popular with local visitors. It's a pity because there are some excellent holes.

The "look" is important too, it's like an anticipation building up for the round.

When i play a new course i like a nice straight forward first hole where i can see the flag nothing worse than shooting for a hole you cant see straight away. But a nice reception is always a plus from the shop to the stewards makes you feel welcome.
