I am looking for a small family car and some suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have had a go in a hyundai i30 and liked it, also mazda 3 looking promising (currently have mazda 6) but what others should I consider - not VW! Now the awkward bit - must be automatic and around the 9,000 or less mark (second hand).

More focus/astra sized than the diddy ones - I am tall so any rear legroom quickly disappears! Main considering factor is cheapness of running and if poss some warranty left. BMW would be nice but running and servicing costs are higher I believe - same with Audi. The kia cee'd I had not thought of - do they have a 7 year warranty?
Not French either.........

i nearly bought a ceed last year, a lot of car for the money and a 7yr warranty from new. they have just brought out a new model too so may be some decent deals around on the prev model

Why not a VW? They hold their value very well, a sensible purchase. Also, if you are planning to keep the car a long time and not worried about main dealer servicing, there are lots of very good BMW/Audi/Merc specialist garages out there that do a really good job at a fraction of main dealer prices.

Not VW as I had a lemon of a Polo a few (10) years ago which cost us a fortune (flywheel, suspension and belt all failed within 18 mths of buying it) and has put me off big style. Do you reckon the kia is better than the hyundai then? No love for the mazda?

Not necessarily. I have a 320 diesel coupe. 177Hp engine but only £130 per year for road tax and I get around 55mpg from it (it's heavier than the 1 series so economy would be increased).
Also my older 55 plate one I have had since new and had very little issues with it so costs have been relatively low.

Just got an 09 ceed, love it!

The new ceed is stunning! I believe Kia is the "sportier" version of Hyundai, same chassis and usually same engines.

Isn't it the other way round? I'd certainly view Hyundai's as "sportier" than Kia's. (I use the term "sportier" loosely! :D)

The new i30's look great.

A few of us keep harping on but the Skoda Octavia is a fantastic car and very hard to beat in the value for money stakes.

I couldnt help but fancy this

Ignoring the mileage, modern cars will tramp over 250k easily. It has the DSG gearbox, looks to be in immaculate condition and should be well under 9k.

Yep. Lovely cars. Would have bought one in a heartbeat but HID refuses to own a Skoda...So we bought a Ford Mondeo instead  (though to be fair, I love our Mondeo)

Thanks guys, the octavia looks good but like aztecs the missus doesn't want to know and it's for her as well. Starting to bend towards a Kia with 7 year warranty - I'm tight and view driving as something that happens inbetween being places ie not my favouriye passtime:ooo:. Used to own an impreza wrx and since then haven't been too bothered about driving and sadly couldn't justify the cost of running the stupid thing!
Would be easier if the car we both liked - the mazda 3 - had leg room in the back for non midgets ith me in the front! I need to put the seat back to it's stops whatever I drive - even our barge of a mazda 6!

I honestly cant believe some people still believe in the stigma with Skodas from 20 years ago. Look under the bonnet and you will see AUDI/VW branding everywhere but costs a lot less than their counterparts, and the difference really? A plastic chrome effect badge on the front, whether its the VW sign, Skoda, Audi or SEAT, the badge is the difference and if she cant see beyond that, well......
I have convinced a couple of misinformed or ignorant snobs while I had my Octavia VRS, one easy drive down a road and once they saw the toys, room, price and quality, they were sold.

Well what - she's thick, ignorant or both??
That reads very badly Brendy.
Ignorance isnt an insult, its simply a state of being unaware or uninformed.
The two guys I surprised (audi and jag drivers) were right out there on the end of the scale (I dont know your missus so was careful to start a new paragraph on that one ;) I was simply showing the far end of the spectrum as an extreme)
I stand by my statement that many people are blissfully ignorant to some things which really have come on in leaps and bounds in a fairly short space of time. MD golf is another, when they first came out the thought was "well its cheap so it must be crap". Quite a few good golfers I know use them now, its all about enlightenment I believe. I am not tight but definitely believe in value for money.

Brendy - My wife and I can hardly be accused of snobbishness when we are looking at hyundai or Kia!! As for cheaper brands coming on leaps and bounds these 2 fit that bill as well.
I am fully aware of the skoda/seat/vw/audi thing but my dislike of vw may come through here.
As for ignorance not being an insult, go out and call a few people ignorant and judge the reactions.

Hyundai i series motors are nice, our neighbour picked up an almost new black i30 for well under what I would have imagined it cost, well specced and a great warranty.
The word ignorant is widely misunderstood to be an insult, I can only repeat myself, it isn't, some people (the Jag and Audi drivers for example) were happy to trust their knowledge of what they thought was good and bad, they never sought to change their own minds and it was only once they had been inadvertently shown the car then took it for a test drive that they changed their minds. How can anyone know any different until they are shown it? It isnt a failing, just a fact of life.
I was always a titleist professional 90 ball user then Prov1 once the Professional ceased production, It never entered my head to try anything else, one day found a TM penta and Bridgestone b330s. I now use Penta5 balls. It doesnt make me any less the person for trying something else, I just wish I had tried them before I eventually did.

Agree, general consensus is the Hyundai has the cooler image. Its especially popular in the US than the Kia brand.

My choice, I will go for the i30. Put it this way, the CEO of VW after inspecting the i30 wasn't impressed with his own brands build quality.
But, again go test both and see which car suits you and the wife best.
