Just got an email from Golfshot about there new app Golfscape it uses the camera on your i phone and by moving gives you the distances the green ,bunkers and hazards looks quality, its $20 by the way.

I've recently started using golfshot and really like the idea of it. The only snag is that I noticed up in the changing rooms yesterday that you are allowed to use gps devices but if the device is capable of measuring wind, slope gradients, temperature then you are not allowed to use the device (whether you are using them applications or not).

So no iPhones allowed then in comps.

Highly disappointed after my £17.99 investment.

Why can't you use the Iphone. What app do you have that measures the wind, slope and temp??? I have the weather app but doesn't give the temp or wind speed of where i'm stood.

It's the fact the iPhone has that capability of giving you the information. Whether you have the apps stored on the phone or not, it's the fact you have the access to it that is the point in question.

I think it should be changed to if your found using any of the apps that give you anything other than GPS that could be uses to give you an advantage on the course.

thats absolutely ridiculous, whats the difference between it being on the phone or being on the TV before you start your round? This should be changed, I can't think of an app that can give you any different information that sticking yoru finger in the air. what a load of bolloxs.
I have access to it????????? so does anyone with more than half a brain. Anyone can stand there and see where the wind is coming from, or if it's raining or sunny and in most cases I can give you a better idea than the phone. My phone will only give you the information Michael Fish gave out in the morning for the area.

Anyway, I think golfshot is well worth the money, even if I use it just for the stats and info it can give.

p.s this is just a rant at the rule, not you.

I think that when the rule first came out there were only the laser type measuring devices and some could measure gradients as well as distance - this was not allowed by the rules.

It will be interesting what the R & A do about all manner of devices and apps that are coming out but, as far as I know, you can only use a device to measure the distance and if the machine can do other things, whether the other things are switched on or not is irrelevent, the device is against the rules.

Intherough I agree with the rant. It's total b****cks

ChrisD you've hit nail on head. I hope they change the rulings on it as most people these days will buy a gps golf app like GolfShot for £17.99 rather than spending £150-£250 on a pure gps device. Disappointing ATM.

I didn't. I did the research and downloaded myCaddie pro for free. Does everything Golfshot does (maybe not the silly camera thing, but GPS gives me distance anyway)and costs £17.99 less. Simples.

This is direct from the R&A.....

The use of distance measuring devices during a stipulated round remains contrary to the Rules of Golf; however, a Committee can permit them via a Local Rule (see below).

In terms of a GPS device on an iPhone or Blackberry, provided the distance application that is downloaded measures just distance only, it is permitted to use the iphone or Blackberry for this purpse when the Local Rule is in place. However, it is worth noting that any other applications on the phone such as a compass, wind speed or temperature gauge would render the iPhone non-conforming, even although the specific distance application does not measure these aspects. Therefore as your phone has and displays a temperature app, it would not be possible to use the distance application in a competition.

It is appreciated that as the Internet is now readily available on most mobile phones and multi-functional devices, it is possible to access non-conforming information through this route at any time. In terms of the Rules, provided the Internet is not used for this purpose, the fact that it exists on the phone does not render the distance application non-conforming.

If your iphone or Android phone has an App installed that can provide you with information contrary to the rules - ie compass, gradient, slope, temperature, wind speed then you are unable to use it during competition.
Just because your phone has internet capability doesn't make it illegal to use a GPS App. Its the other Apps you may have on board that make it illegal. Remove these Apps and you can use as many GPS Apps as you like.

So according to that from the R&A, you can't ever use the iPhone as it has a compass and weather app installed by default which cannot be deleted. My head of comps told us we could use them, however that seems pretty clear, so I won't be using mine in competitions anymore.
