So me and the missus will be doing the NC 500 in June. I think I might be able to sneak my carry bag in the van, so I have been looking at courses.
I started by looking at the likes of Royal Dornoch, but it is £300!!!

So - recommendations to get me thinking and planning as a one ball with a wife sitting back in the tent drinking wine?

Brora, and Durness...

I actually only played the very last hole at Durness and paid a fiver for it. It was magical. Not great value for money though, as I birdied it

The Golfmates YouTube channel has done a load of videos on that route. Have a look at their Scottish hidden gems series. Some of the courses they featured looked fantastic and some where great value.

I was going to say the exact same thing. They have played some fantastic looking courses up there, and of course by watching you get to see for yourself. The problem as I see it would be which to choose.

Sounds like I need to plan my next road trip (minus Royal Dornoch as lord I can't stretch to that)

Don't disagree with any of the above. If you're stopping on the A9 on the way up Kingussie is a lovely course with a real highland feel to it.
If you're carrying a pencil bag and want a quick nine holer Strachcarron is in a very nice lochside setting and cheap to play.

Similar to me my wife doesn’t play but I got a highland pass and got to play Fortrose Golspie Tain and Brora at a reduced rate.

Also played Royal Dornoch, on west coast I played Gairloch nice course close to the sea.

But far and away the highlight was playing Durness fantastic place with spectacular views.

That’s a fiver well spent, unfortunately I put my tee shot in the sea but what a fun hole to play.

I played it on a beautiful summers evening and was the only one on the course as you say it’s magical, I enjoyed it more than Royal Dornoch.

Serious question. Is there a course on the coast that isn't worth a visit? I guess price plays into that question, but I figure every coastal course is special.

Very true the only addendum I would add is that in the Highlands I can't remember a single Inland course that I've not enjoyed either, though some can get pretty wet in bad weather.
But I've very fond memories of the likes of Pitlochry, Braemar, Kingussie, Boat of Garten, Strathpeffer and so on.

I would also suggest Portmahomack which is a 9 hole links off the A9 at Tain with two sets of tees, its really good fun and cheap as Chips. old fashioned type course. there is also Bonar Bridge and a 9 hole but has some stunning scenery and this time of year there are lots of Osprey fishing in the two Lochs nearby. again Really good fun and pretty quite. As others suggested Reay is a good shout as is Wick.
