Natural Ability

Re: A natural golfer

More postural changes to be fair (More relaxed). The swing plane is steeper, but not Furyk steep. Tempo is still the same too.

nice relaxed tempo alright. you should rename it "the penny drops" video. I love the way you are automatically heading to grab you divot then remembering that you have to stop the video. lol

got a video of your new wedge swing?

I always put my divots back, even on the practice area!

I haven't got a recent video Gary.

The only videos of my recent swing are on my Pro's iPad. If I get a minute before I play this weekend, I'll do one.

cool.

what would you say is the difference in the results between the two wedge swings if any?

J.O. might be able to answer this for me. does an upright swing impart more (back) spin on the ball? I heard this on a video the other night (cant remember who said it) and wondered if it was true!

The two main things that are different are the same two things I stated lessons for:

1. Consistency

2. Dispersion

My swing is more consistent and more controlled. Before I would be happy just to hit the green. With my current swing I seem to hit the ball a whole lot closer to the whole. Not stone dead, bit definatley closer than before.

Re: A natural golfer

I quite like that first swing. nice and short backswing. seems like it has control built in naturally along with that smooth tempo!

Spin comes from 'spin loft' .... the angle of descent and the loft that is on the club face,.... and speed..... upright isn't the same as 'steep', upright is the plane of the shaft, steep is the angle of attack. Steep usually takes off some loft... being upright normally OPENS the face adding some loft.

Re: A natural golfer

it was one of the old timers. I cant remember which one. it was just his opinion id say. no fancy trackman data to back up his claim.

Re: A natural golfer

When you chip you stand closer to the ball, so you are more upright. You also open the face so you have more loft. You also don't want to be too steep on it and stick the club in the ground behind the ball .... so in this example it would make sense, but that's just chipping/pitching... I wouldn't say that's how you'd want to hit from 150yds :p

Re: A natural golfer

I found something similar when rooting through my YouTube account.

The first swing video I ever took of myself.

Video was captured in 2011 (July), after I started playing in the summer of 2010.

It looks nothing like this now

both balls overshot the flag by miles Gareth  :smirk:

I always said you had a good swing havent I?

Re: A natural golfer

@ OP (you asked about natural ability so heres my opinion purely based on the 1 short vid) he's alright, probably just very average for- heres the key- a young fit flexible guy! the golf swing really isnt difficult when you are young fit and able.........plus you said he really isnt bothered so just does what is natural ie hit an object with a stick.

He will need to change a few things and practice them if he wants to be any better next year than he currently is.

just my opinion though

Its not just how well he hits the ball but the way within 6 months he is starting to play the sort of golf that you would be expecting after a couple of years. Got a very tidy short game and is learning to get out of trouble without try to play a hero shot.
