well well well , what went wrong ? gross 102 my worst round in 08 22 stableford points , at a guess i didn't practice how i would normally like , because i wasn't sure of precedings as it was my first comp, i hung around the clubhouse so that i didn't miss anything i needed to know . also off the white tees which didn't really make any difference as i was as good as i have been all year off the tee , i out drove the rest of the group by 50 yards and pretty strait ..

if only my putting turned up and my second shot was very poor , which is normally a strong part of my game .

overall i really enjoyed it and happy with the long game , i thought i was gonna really struggle on some holes where the tee is up to 70 yards back but doesn't seem a problem . i still feel i can compete next time and do quite well ..

time to start spending more time on and around the practice green i think !!!!!

well done happy, at least you have some positives to take from the experience. Put in the practice and the results will speak for themselves.

you have made me feel a bit better as I had a shocker today in a friendly foursome comp - 23 points to my golfing buddy's 38!!!!
And the weather was fab - what excuse did I have?
I have already booked a lesson, and realise something drastic needs to be done, but you make me realise this is all part of golf.
Think positive!

Glad you taking the positives out of it mate.

Remember this is your first comp, it really does get easier as you get used to playing with a scorecard in your hand.

Good luck and happy golfing!

It does get easier. The only thing I'd say from reading the first post is that it strikes me you were at the club way too early. If you are not going to go out and putt or hit some balls I'd get there about 20 minutes before hand. Enough time to get your card, get everything organised (balls tees etc) and just enough time to do some stretching or maybe hit a few in the practice net.

The trouble with getting there too early is that you begin to use nervous energy. Am I going to get it off the first? What are my partners like? Have I got everything? That way it is hard to focus.

As for your irons and putting, it is something I regularly struggle with. I get so focussed on trying to hit it close that I fail to commit to the shot and often miss the target. This puts pressure on the short game to keep chipping and putting. If I do hit the green it is hard to stop that little voice going "get it close, make sure you don't 3 putt"

Now that you have done it once you can relax. There is no more mystique. My parting suggestion would be to find a routine that you are happy with, either going out and hitting some balls or just getting there a bit late. Once you have something that works stick with it.

It seems as though a few of us are heading into our first comps. Mine is still a week or so off (April 9th) and like happy, first time off the whites.

I have to be honest and say that I'm not expecting a big score as I have been struggling of late, but I'm not going to put it off as that can only make things worse in the long run. Let you know how things went later (and I will be following much of Homer's pre-game advice).
