80 years ago yesterday my Dad, Alan Cameron Gilg and his companion set off to drive from Liverpool to Cape Town in a Morris Minor tourer.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of this we are publishing his diary from travels on a day to day basis.

It can be followed here http://www.vintageminor.co.uk/Gilg/Gilg.html.

Hopefully it will give an insight to a time past when adventures were still to be had for a relatively low cost

They made it yet?

Interesting trip, will look later, They dont make em like that anymore

Wow, great piece of local history.

Cue the hubcaps jokes......

I once drove to Switzerland for a Liverpool European match, that pales into insignificance.

Can you imagine having the bottle to do what they did, some people wont drive an hour without a satnav nowadays.

How fantastic.

Prompted me to look up some stuff about a somewhat similar caper my wife's Grandfather (Capt R B W G Andrew MC and Bar) was invovled in, crossing the sahara from West to East in 1931-33 as part of a Royal Geographical Society Expedition.

Love this bit

"The various Governments concerned warned us beforehand of the difficulties that it entailed, especially with machines not equipped with tracks. Road reports were difficult to obtain (that is, where roads existed), but, having motored extensively in Africa, we accepted the African motorist's motto, "chance it."

At least they seemed to have used a rather more suitable vehicle. To travel the length of Africa in a standard motor car was amazing.
