Multiculturalism

The food and carnivals are great but there are facets of other cultures that are not so cute. FGM, Honour killings, Arranged marriages, Homophobia, Unequally of Women, Child grooming gangs to name a few.

Multiculturalism is fine as long as it's something that applies in peoples private lives and is not morally or politically offensive to the adoptive country. It should also not be politically driven as this needs the 'Thought Police' to control it.

If you find a way to eradicate all those things from other "cultures", please also get rid of all the horrible things that are in the "traditional British" culture.

I hate it when things are politically driven. I mean, slavery should have just worked its own way out to stop, and I can't see why they come up with silly rules that mean you can't discriminate on the basis of race.

What do you mean by "politically driven" pleasE?

Didn't think it would take too long to get the popcorn out ..

I don't think any one community has exclusivity on homophobia, sexual exploitation of children or inequality of women. The established, indigenous communities have done and continue to be pretty capable in that and other "not so cute" areas.

There should be no discrimination in Public life, all should be treated equally in a secular manner. Please explain these horrible things in traditional British culture?

The abolition of Slavery was not a result of multiculturalism or political will, it was as a result of humanitarian conscience.

The right to practice a particular religion, speak a particular language, follow a particular cultural practice is now seen as a public good rather than a private freedom. Different interest groups demand to have their 'differences' institutionalised in the public sphere. To politically enforce this requires the 'Thought Police' to intervene.

Also our sporting achievements and music have also been improved by multiculturalism. So if you add in better food then happy days I say.;)

Would also include the working environment as well

We have some very talented and clever people from different cultures that make our working environment very good.

It's all good to me

Indeed. I was at a conference the other week and there was an expert on child sexual exploitation speaking. And whilst he acknowledged that there is a cultural problem in some Asian communities, the vast majority of child sexual exploitation and grooming in this country is done by 'white males'. It's just that the Daily Mail don't seem to want to print that story for some reason. I mean if you were cynical it is almost like they have an agenda or something

I'd like to add that another benefit of multiculturalism is that some of the women from other cultures are fit as fu........Or would I be displaying some good old fashioned British sexism in saying that?

I think you would be exhibiting British values in embracing one of the many benefits of multiculturalism. Nothing wrong with that.;)

Yes, absolutely yes!

Chinese New Year in Chinatown - brilliant! Sitting down to a stunning curry on the curry mile in Manchester - fantastic. Tuesday saw me choosing some Polish food from Asda - wow. Went to the local kids nursery with the g'daughter not so long back, where they were celebrating one of the Hindu festivals - very thought provoking. And then there's the roast beef and Yorkshire puds in the golf club - not bad I suppose.

Britain is a fantastically diverse place to be. If someone else doesn't want to buy into that, that's there choice... but I feel they're missing out massively.

I agree 100%. I would like to think I treat everyone as I'd like to be treated irrespective of colour and race. Growing up as a kid in the 70's and a teenager in the 80's I can remember the horrible bullying of Asian and West Indian kids and the racial tensions following the rioting in Brixton and elsewhere

These days we have so many nationalities here, it's become a total melting pot and if you open yourself up you can experience some wonderful sights, tastes and culture

The thread wasn't really about racism Homer.

That's because the vast majority of the population are white, percentages from each race is a fairer gauge to your arguement.
