Multiculturalism

Do you consider Multiculturalism in the UK as something that Unites or Divides us?

Depends on the "Us" really doesn't it..
It should unite us, but for some (on both sides of the divide), it is used as something to divide us... Shame really as a bit more understanding from everyone would go a long way...

Think that sums it up very well

Well said. I am sure for some people they could argue it divides us, others say it mostly enriches the society. I'm in the latter camp but I am sure many are in the former.

By 'Us' I mean 'As a Nation'

In all honesty mate, I stand by my statement..
I can honestly say that my life has been enriched by Multiculturalism.. As I'm a second/third generation immigrant myself (German Mother, Irish/English Father), I'd be hard pressed to say anything else.. I should caveat that statement with the fact that the area that I live in has not traditionally been an area with a large influx of "Foreigners". I do appreciate that other people in other locations will have a different experience to myself..

Yes, absolutely yes!

Chinese New Year in Chinatown - brilliant! Sitting down to a stunning curry on the curry mile in Manchester - fantastic. Tuesday saw me choosing some Polish food from Asda - wow. Went to the local kids nursery with the g'daughter not so long back, where they were celebrating one of the Hindu festivals - very thought provoking. And then there's the roast beef and Yorkshire puds in the golf club - not bad I suppose.

Britain is a fantastically diverse place to be. If someone else doesn't want to buy into that, that's there choice... but I feel they're missing out massively.

Personally I do not believe that multiculturalism is good for this country but multiracialism is a positive.

A nation's culture is an organic thing and is constantly evolving by absorbing influences from the different races of people living within that nation.

This has been the case in this country for hundreds if not thousands of years. Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings, Normans, French, German, Dutch and, more recently, Afro Caribbean, South Asian, Chinese, Eastern European have all had positive effects upon the British culture and long may this continue.

What I do not like to see is the maintenance of outside or foreign cultures by groups without any attempt on their part or the rest of society towards integration. This is what leads to resentment and suspicion on all sides.

Agreed.

See Trevor Phillips recent musings on precisely this subject too for further reading.

Very well put

I did actually think one of the best shows I've ever seen was the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony that was celebrating our diverse history and multicultural society. And that made me more proud to be British than just about anything else.

But then again one mans triumph of a show is another Tory MPs lefty multicultural crap....

I wasn't questioning your reply. Just answering your question.

The food and carnivals are great but there are facets of other cultures that are not so cute. FGM, Honour killings, Arranged marriages, Homophobia, Inequality of Women, Child grooming gangs to name a few.

Multiculturalism is fine as long as it's something that applies in peoples private lives and is not morally or politically offensive to the adoptive country. It should also not be politically driven as this needs the 'Thought Police' to control it.
