47, 52, 58 for me.
I was a 4 wedge Man until recently (45/50/54/58) but found I was barely ever using the 54 and felt I was lacking a longer club.

PW, 52*, 56* and 60* for me.

I don't really need all the clubs at the top end of my bag so benefit more from having the options lower down. It lets me be more creative around the green and hit more full shots into it too.

I have 3. PW, 52 and 56. I experimented with a lob wedge at the expense of a hybrid but found myself barely using it so I got rid. I feel as though I can get as much loft as I need with an opened up 56

Why? At the expense of what?

Again, all answers are appreciated.

Many thanks,

Nick

4: PW, GW, SW, LW. The only one that I hear questioned (on here) is the lob wedge. I like the option of short, high shots over bunkers etc. Especially off of bare lies as the bounce is much lower than my SW.

At the expense of the price of the wedges;). If I took out a wedge I would have an empty slot because there are no gaps elsewhere.

60* lob full shot for me is 65-75 yards
56* Sand full shot 80-90 yards
52* Gap full shot 95-105 yards
48* PW full shot 110-115 yards

Having that extra wedge with different bounce also gives me options on tight and fluffy lies/bunkers

4, 46[SUP]O[/SUP] bent to 45[SUP]O[/SUP], 50[SUP]O[/SUP], 56[SUP]O[/SUP] and a 62[SUP]O[/SUP]

Why? Because they give me good coverage from around 120yds down to 60yds with 20yds gaps between each

At the expense of nothing.

Three for me, standard PW(46deg) and SW(55deg) that came with my iron set, plus a 50deg gap wedge.

Not at the expense of anything, happy with my current bag setup. My Pro instructor has said that I could think about getting a LW, but that would cause me to remove something.

currently have pw (44) a 54 & 58 degree....currently on the look out for a 50 to plug the gap

not at the expense of anything as I don't play a course long enough to need lots of long clubs

been working hard on the short game so trying to load the bag for short clubs

You didn't have an option for 5.

1 Left handed, Right handed usually 4, 3 is a consideration.

I carry either Pw, 52, 56, 60 or Pw 52, 58, 64. If I wanted to carry 3 I'd drop the 64 and go for the 2nd option. If I wanted 5 I'd add 64 to the 1st option.

I buy into Pelz's premise of 65% of shots are within 100 yards which determine 80% of handicaps.

I consider distance control to be of prime concern for wedge and part shots and direction to be the issue for longer shots. I feel better able to hit different distances and trajectories with more clubs and consider the wedges to be the scoring clubs, hopefully providing opportunities for birdies and the longer clubs to get it near enough to make pars.

I think golf is about your misses, but also about great shots with the wedges (great shots with other clubs not leaving you close enough to make significant statistical gains although I did see some interesting data presented recently which suggests on tour at least some advantages for bombing your driver) which give opportunities to save shots. Your long game going someway to indicating your high score (lower the more consistent it is) and your short game indicating you lowest scoring potential.

I'd leave a gap at the top end either going driver 4 wood 2i/H 4-pw, or having driver 3 wood 5W/2I and going 4-pw. I'd look to cover that gap by shaping the ball, gripping down, swinging easier.

3 wedges by definition.

The PW is more iron like than wedge, so I only feel like I carry 2 wedges.

One wedge for splash shots from bunkers, one wedge for fairway/fringe chips and pitches.

I use other clubs for bunkers, chipping and pitching but only when the situation dictates I vary from the default.

Used to carry 4 (48 52 56 60) but that didn't allow me anything between the 3 wood and 3 iron resulting in a 40 yard gap. Down to 3 now (48 52 56). BTW they 52 & 56 both have a 12 bounce which I find really handy for varying bunker shots.
