I may be wrong but I believe that officially any balls lost and/or abandoned on a golf course belong to the club.

Picking up and keeping found balls during the course of a round is generally OK, but if you are going onto a course with the specific intent to find and keep golf balls then some clubs may consider that trespass and theft. Selling them on could be viewed as selling stolen property.

a lot of clubs post notices about this, and turning up with fins and snorkel is definitely frowned on.

I wouldn't mind betting that some clubs have also sold the rights to these 'finders'. afterall the 'lake ball' stock has to come from somewhere.

mind you, they don't tell you in the proshop that you're not buying the balls, only renting them
