our is 36 holes of stroke play over 2 days,it seems to work very well always a good comp

Can't comment on the interesting club comp debate but as someone who's golfing aim is to get as low a handicap as possible you'd think I'd plum for a nice easy track. On the contrary I've gone for one that is recognised locally as being a little bit tight. Not the hardest but not the easiest either.
Not only do I want a testing learning environment but how embarrassing would it be if I got to scratch and was invited out to play and posted scores of +10 because I'd got my handicap on an easy course. Jezz is right about SSS. The course I played last week is the same as the one I'm joining. I thought last weeks was much easier and my friend who plays off 18, didn't play all winter and strolled off net -8 agreed wholeheartedly.

We have a 36 hole qualifier over two days, then the top 16 go into a matchplay draw with the final two weeks down the line.
We have Finals Day where the course is closed to normal play and all the club championship matches are played out on the Sunday.
It's usually a good day out and the prizegiving ends off the day in late afternoon.

Our Club Champs are 36 hole medal, off scratch. You can only enter it if your single figure. There are usually around 40+ entries and the best players always seem to rise to the top, Mark Wharton(+2) or John Kemp(+3)are never far away.
Alot of golfers get their h`caps at easier courses, but they get found out when they go away to play! We have found that when the county champs are at our course the numbers are down on the norm because alot of them will get .2 back because its to hard for them, and they get found out.
This then leads to a problem that golfers from good clubs face. A scratch(.2) golfer from Wentworth will be a far better player than one from Wyboston(0), but if both of them enter a major amateur comp and the entry is high, who will be the one balloted out? Not fair is it!

I have to agree with the 36 hole (plus) stroke play camp, but I do think having it over 1 day can make it a bit of a younger (fitter) mans game.
18 sat, 18 sun handicap limit of 12 so some vastly improving juniors can get a feel of the weekend.
Add to this a big hog roast on the sunday evening to make sure that the whole club are celebrating their club championship!
