Wife's contract with BT is up today, if I get the pac code from them does it automatically cancel any renewal or do I still need to contact them. I have a SIM ready to activate and put in her phone.

Yes it does, no need to contact them

I will add in the past 3 months I've done this with my wife's bt contract and doing tomorrow with my own O2 contract

Both times not told them

Confirmed by BT when I phoned them.
It is cancelled as soon as the other company transfers the number.
When I switched last month the other company (1p Mobile) let me choose the day I wanted to transfer to take place.
