Looking for a bit of advice/opinion here guys - I recently bought the Callaways over the forum as something of an experiment and am very much undecided about whether or not they are helping my game.

Basically, I got a 2nd-hand set of the MX900's shortly after taking up golf nearly 3 years ago. For those that aren't familiar with them, they have pretty traditional forged 8i-pw but hollow-backed 3-7 irons, albeit with forged faces or something like that. Anyway, in that time the standard of my swing has vastly improved as you would expect and when playing well I really like the clubs (don't we all ), but I've never been totally comfortable with how different the 2 types of iron look and feel. On a bad day, I often wish I had a more forgiving set throughout.

The result? Despite having lessons after joining a club last november and seeing improvement, I managed to convince myself that I could score better if I was using a set of big, chunky GI irons. Hence the Callaways. Now, when I first got them I wasn't sure about them at all because I was developing a habit of hooking the occasional shot in my search to correct previous swing flaws, and the huge offset on the new clubs compared to the MX900's only seemed to exaggerate this. That said, my best ever round on the main course at my club was an 88 on only my second outing with them.

I went back to using the 900's once the 'power-draw' had been dealt with (largely) and felt much more comfortable, expecially with the short irons - I couldn't and still can't quite deal with looking down at a 9/8i quite so large and shovelly as the BIG Berthas are. I was playing really well at this point, even managing 18 holes round our 9-hole course in only 67 shots (par 31 twice). All was good.

Unfortunately, a severe attack of the sherman tanks during a round a few weeks later (we are talking about 8 or 9 of the b***ers, not just the odd one) made me think about re-trying the Callaways and they have gone pretty well since. I still like them better for anything roughly 4-6i, and still can't stand the short irons (not that I've been playing noticably worse with them compared the the Mizunos, but I just hate the look and don't feel confident using them for shots around the green).

So, my question is:
Which set would you persevere with and why? As I'm sure you can tell, I really am in 2 minds on this. If money was no object I would probably ditch both and go and get custom-fitted for a set I really liked (I'm a bit of a short-ass at only 5'3'' so it would probably make sense), but I can't really justify that right now :(

Split them! If your confident with the mizuno short irons and the callaway long irons then do that! And work on the long Mizunos on range sessions until you feel that you can hit them just as well as the cally's

I agree, split the set. The callaway 4&5 irons are very easy to hit and gave me a lot of confidence but anything shorter and they were just far too big for my liking, hence why I sold them to you!
At least you've given them a try and you would definitely get your money back if you sold the callys as you got them for such a bargain! ;)

Oh, how I enjoyed this post.

Just have a read of my signature before ignoring or taking my advice. :)

I play with a split set and won't be going back any-time soon. I bought my 900s without the 3+4 hybrid clubs and added a rescue 3 and BB2002 4 iron. I used them for ages, frustrated that although I liked Callaways and always wanted a set, couldn't get past the visual appearance and seemingly unstoppable hooking/pulling with the short irons. Cutting high (short iron) shots into greens (small fade) was my bread and butter for years before I quit playing for a long time.

Only you can decide where to split the sets. I try and play with as many of the Callaways as I can bear, currently it's just 4-9 irons, but before last summer, it was 4-7 and used the rest from the Mizuno set. The Callaways work for me, but I do have a slow-ish swing and struggle to get the ball up with bouts of thinning now and again. I don't rate the Mizuno 900s 5-7 much at all. For a supposedly Game Improvement set, they are not that easy to hit. The short irons are marvellous, but hey, they are Mizuno..... :)

Split 'em up, give 'em a go and see how you get on.

PS - all my best games (gross 75-80) during 2010 were played with almost entirely Callaways.

Thanks for the replies guys, I reckon I'll be giving the split-set a go tomorrow morning, although to be honest half the reason I got the callys in the first place was that I didn't like having 2 different styles within the 1 set of clubs :p

Not quite sure where to split them, but probably going with 8i-pw in the mizunos and the rest callaways to start with. Point taken about as many callaways as I can bear Dave, but I think I'm right in saying that mine are even bigger, thicker and more hideous then your X-18's  so I'll stick with just 4-7 for now.

Only problem is I know I will get loads of 'banter' from my playing partner for mixing it all up as he seems to think the mizzies are really nice clubs

This is true. :) and I think you might have more offset too.
Give it a go then. Use the tasty 8/9/PW 900s and the rest the not-so-tasty buy easy-to-play-with BBs.
