At last Mizuno has come up with a hybrid that offers a smooth transition from the compact heads of the four irons in the MP series into a more forgiving long iron replacement.
Looks: By nature of the beast, its looks are similar to many other hybrids on the market - irons on steroids, rather than shrunken down woods! - but the MP Fli-Hi offers a genuine option for good ball-strikers looking for something a bit more forgiving at the top end of the bag.
Drawing design inspiration from Tour players like Luke Donald and Brian Gay the MP Fli-Hi features a choice of three compact heads with minimal offset and with slightly wider sole.
Feel/performance: Players who prefer blades tend to feel that previous incarnations of the Fli-Hi featured too much offset, which adversely affected their ability to shape the ball or manage the trajectory.
This has been overcome with the new version, which is essentially a long iron with a nod towards ‘hybridity’ thanks to the hollow construction of the head. There’s still plenty of feel, but the overwhelming response is of solidity, mixed in with the ability to hit shots with more control than you could ever hope to achieve with a bulkier head. Distance is exceptional, with the ball flying much higher and dropping from a much steeper angle than you could achieve with an equivalent iron. I can see top players slipping in the 2 Fli-Hi into a set of the new MP 58s or MP 68s, while good amateurs should consider bagging the lot and reducing their MP iron set to 5- to 9-iron.
