Up to this year I haven't recorded scores other than those returned for handicaps. This year I started keeping a record of each round (not in great detail though - Av +2; 34 points) and on the last two I've started recording fairways, GIR and putts.

Now I know two rounds is way too few for any sort of analysis but it does make interesting reading and does prove what I instinctively knew, my second/third shot is killing me.

F. 61.6% G. 16.6% P. 36
F. 69% G. 33% P. 36

F. 61.6% G. 16.6% P. 36
F. 69% G. 33% P. 36

69% fairways, 33% greens, 36 putts.

I'd accept 36 putts for 6/18 greens!!

I didn't miss a fairway today (well, 3 just on the right-hand cut) but only hit the 1st and last 4 holes for 5/18 GIR.

It's an odd game.....

Thankfully, every 7 iron (newly replaced shaft) went like a dream!!

Consitant with the putter though which must boost the confidence, just need to work on the irons into the green, it all comes with practice (so I'm told) I to need a bit of help in this area.

I have never kept stats, but will give it a go and see how I get on.

Viscount... Approach shots need work looking at the stats & I think I'd be doing some work with the putter, looking at those putting stats. You need to shave a couple off that 36 average at the very least.

However it must be said with improving approach work, it'll probably help putting stats anyhow

I think 60 to 70% of fairways hit is a very good figure. Surely this gives your game a headstart.

Must admit I wouldn't mind being a little off the fairway if I knew my next shot would get me on the dance floor on a parr4.. Though just as equally if I missed a green I'd be over the moon if I saved parr with a single putt.

Mind you I'm still blowing hot & cold with my flat stick. Too many narrow misses, tapins & lipouts loosing me shots over the rounds. Must dig out the stats I've had of late when on the course. Data is on My sureshot.

I agree. Very good.

For most of us, putting together a good score is about not making silly and costly mistakes. Keep the ball in play, better to be on the course with a conservative club etc. etc.

For those of us with shots to spare, the 3rd shot is SO important. Providing you can stay out of trouble, being able to hit the green from anything under 100 yards and safely 2-putting is the answer to keeping steady.

I sometimes miss long or to one side from 60-100, but then I scramble well....if I didn't I'd be off a good few more....

When I step onto the 1st, it could either be a 9 GIR or a 0 GIR day, I never know :) :D either way, I'm chasing 6 pars (minimum) and nearly always get there.

Viscount,
It may be worth looking at where you miss greens. Left, right, long, short. This might tell you why you are missing them, ie, if often short = club up, often right/left = check alignment etc.

If you are missing greens and still taking 36 putts maybe you need to work on chipping to improve up&downs, this should help with the number of putts.

My coach told me recently that knowing the stats is the first step toward putting things right.

Was reading through the thread thinking exactly this , it's your chipping that seems to need the work not your iron play

Having had the dubious pleasure of playing with Viscount recently, I'd think that it was his short game that needed most attention. Chipping and short range pitching.

Hopefully I'll get to play with him again at The Belfry. A great person to have a bit of banter with around the course.

If only all rounds were like these, but as the four-ball at RA could tell you, when the driver takes a holiday I'm stuffed. Using any wood as an alternative just isn't an option, which is why this evening I tried 9-holes with just irons, 3-i off the tee mostly.
I don't think I hit a clean one (better with the 4-i), so a bit short though mainly straight so I found most fairways. Second shots did it again and don't even ask about the putting (a bit of frustration crept in there I think)!

Seriously my most consistently worst shots tend to be the second. Whether this is from trying to do too much, hit it too hard I'm not sure. Biggest fault is hitting the ground first plus the 'best' shots always go left.

Missing the greens, 4 long (just had the PW re-shafted and am hitting it longer), 2 left, 1 right; the others were missed because the approach wasn't even in the same county.

Viscount. As it was put to me at Crowbourgh by a couple of forumers. So what if your second shot is slightly off target. Learn how to chip, pitch, bump and run etc, and the scores will improve. Apparently :D

Joking aside. There's no way I would have scored over 30 at RA without having been practising my short game. And as you saw, occasionally you get lucky and one goes in. :D

It is no coincidence that the pros dedicate something like 70% of their practice time to the short game as they realise that is where the scores are made and lost. Getting up and down regularly for par (in their case) is the difference not only of making the cut week in week out but for getting good finishes even when the ball striking may not be 100%
