Might as well bin my TV license ........

So if I promise not to use any of the bbc services I don’t need one?

You’ll still need one. Basically don’t watch anything that’s being shown live on TV. Or use bbc I player.
So use Amazon, Netflix, YouTube. kodi box.

Apparently you can’t watch it on your computer or your laptop either but I don’t think they can enforce that anyway whatever they say.

I’ve got Sky at home, I barely have it on. I use Netflix or watch series off the net. Our lass is the sole watcher of live TV.

Just a stealth tax for the UK propaganda machine.
Don’t buy a paper, don’t watch the news. Ignorance is bliss.

So basically we haven’t got a Choice?

The rules are in place to cover this.

Watch a live event then pay the fee. It’s not a lot of cash at all

Just plumb it into the cost of your contract for any telly. If your free view its £12.50 a month

Sky it’s whatever plus the £12.50

My bt is £18 so add the £12.50 is £30.50 for bt you view plus bt sport

Bargain.

£12.50 for something called Free view kind negates the point doesn't it.

I'm in the boat of why should I pay the BBC a fee if I don't watch it and choose to watch other non BBC channels instead, there's no choice and it goes against all consumer choice rights.

The fact we have to pay the BBC to watch channels broadcast by sky purely because we own a TV in this modern era is ridiculous imo

I also find the attitude of “well I think it’s great value so everyone else should” quite ridiculous.
Almost arrogant.

It will date back no doubt to when the bbc owned the broadcasting facilities so had to pay for maintance etc so your licence fee went for that.

They sold them off and don’t own them now lease them just like itv

May be old fashioned. I always thought be decent if sky and virgin just put it in your package so everyone had a licence and it was taken care of for you

Can’t see sky & virgin jumping at the idea of making their product look more expensive.

I think the point is, you still have to pay license fee to BBC even if you only want to watch say, Sky Sports or E4 and nothing else.
Bbc is worth the £12.50 a month alone if you have kids.. cbbcs app is amazing for downloading shows for kids to watch when on a plane to keep them happy

Decent educational shows and without adverts no demands for toys 👌

Sky V BBC cost comparison

BBC- 9 channels for £147 = £16.33 a channel

Sky over 300 channels for £25 (or less) = £1 a channel.

And yet again you cite an example of the appeal of BBC to some.

However, I ask the same question. Why should others subsidise the viewing habits of that group?

You're again working on the assumption that the BBC is just TV. It also has the radio, thousands of podcasts to download (which I do a lot), for lots of people, it's not just about the TV.
To be honest, the number of pages on this reflects what a pointless argument this all is. You are either for funding the BBC or you're not. 5 or 500 pages of discussion won't change anyones mind.

Your comparisons are strange

First you use the BBC yearly figure and it’s a bit high

Then you use the sky Monthly figure and it’s low

I believe the BBC fee is £125 ish for their channels a year

Sky is - anything from £40 to £130 a month depending on what you have

I have annualised the figures and was trying to compare like with like

A TV licence in the UK is currently £147 a year

Sky Basic is currently £22 a month for a new subscriber and £25 after 18 months

ill ask the question again, why should we be forced to pay for the BBC.

Comparing it to Sky is stupid.
If you don’t want Sky,don’t have Sky.
Simples.

If you think the Bbc is excellent & great value for money then happy days.

Because government decrees we have a state/national broadcaster and we (the people) cover the cost... Simple really!

isnt that how taxation works? one group subsidies another? just like my 40% tax bracket subsides for those who dont earn enough to be able to be taxed.. shared into the pot and funds things....

simplistic
