Messi v Ronaldo

Sorry but no. Look at the defensive line.. how can Messi grab a game with Romero in goal and gaberel Heinz their star defender

Look at Portugal , Pepe, carvelho. What a defensive partnership .. solid at back with a star man
Romero is by now means useless when compared to what 0irtugak have had. As to the defence. FONTE was star defender for the Portugal team that won at the euro 2016.

Can you genuinely say that's better than teams that have contained Otamendi, Zabaleta, Aguero, Macherino, Dubalya, di Maria just to name a few.

Over the last 10 years, Messi has played with consistently better players at intl. A lot of luck is needed to win on the top stage, but I don't see how squad quality can even be considered to be in Ronaldo favour.

Seriously mate, I have no problem with you saying Messi is the better player, but you are way wide of the mark with this Argie/Portugal stuff. As Papas said, the backline of Portugal's march to Euro 2016 featured Southampton's Jose Fonte (at the age of 32), Pepe was a year older at 33, they also had an even older guy in Bruno Alves, 34. Not to be outdone, Ricardo Carvalho still made the squad at 38. They scraped through their group in third as I recall.

Argentina have had their problems at the back but always enough quality to see them through - Otamendi, Zabaleta, Mascherano, Demichelis, Burdisso.

Mascherno isn’t an international standard cb which is where he played

I mean Hayden Mullins kept him out the prem 😉

I was going with defensive players generally, Mascherano would have sat in defensive midfield for Argentina more often than not. Anyway, lets move on, you clearly just hate Ronaldo for some reason, like a lot of people do.

I think some people (maybe you, maybe not you) find it really difficult to separate their personal feelings towards the man from their opinion of him as a sportsman. So we see it with those who won't appreciate Tiger because he got his end away a few times, and you definitely see it in football as well. Cristiano is full of himself, does it make him a worse player? No. Suarez is a nutter who bites people, but is he still a world class striker? Of course. John Terry is a see you next Tuesday of the highest order, but still one of the best centre backs we've seen in the Premier League.

I think if you look at Ronaldo and Messi objectively, analytically, and taking the romance out of it, you'd see Ronaldo is the more complete and superior player. Messi is just nicer to watch.

Ronaldo is a good player. Above any other on the planet Except messi

Different league

If it wasn’t for Messi ronaldo would go down as greatest .. but unlucky for him

Some people letting trophies won cloud their thoughts?

You could argue that the CL is harder to win than the world cup / Euros / Copa.......

Then you have Ronaldo's team winning the last 3 CL, but Messi's team winning the league though.

Ronaldo the all-round game but Vs the best dribbler ever seen?

If one heavyweight is the better boxer, but has a 30 Ko's - 10 - 0 compared to a 40 KO's -0 -0 is it the better fighter, or the better boxer?

Both golfers have 20 majors. One golfer has 20 from one major, the other spread across all majors. Who's the better golfer?

Ronaldo for me.
I suspect he may have got a few more votes if he'd not played for United though.
Think he might of got a lot more votes if he stopped diving, less attitude and just let his feet do the talking. As much as i have gone for Messi. Theres millimetres between them. For me personality just edges it. Bottom line between two similar players. Who would you want your kid to be like.
What cannot be argued is, we have been privileged to have this discussion re two of the greatest ever players playing the game at the same time.

Messi for me. Messi is a less selfish player with a passing awareness that is simply incredible. If he wanted to you could easily see Messi pivot into a Pirlo type player in his twilight years.
You only have to look at the number of and quality of the goals Messi has scored in El Classico to see Messi raises his game further on the big occasions.

Although Ronaldo is the best header of the ball that I've ever seen discounting Pele.

Or Frank Stapleton. :p

Ronaldo I think is the more complete player and more effective. He can bang in goals with either foot, he leaps like an absolute salmon to score bullet headers,(& clear defensively) he can dominate a defender physically as well as technically. Messi is the better dribbler & passer and has the best technique we've ever seen in football, but Ronaldo just has more to his game. Also you have to say he has achieved more, as he succeeded in England, Spain, and now Italy (& shrugged off the 'step-over boy' taunts of his first arrival in the English game), and has an international trophy to his name.

Difference at international level is ronaldo has decent defence and keeper behind him

Messi has a joke

This is total rubbish Paul. For most of their careers Argentina were a much better side than Portugal, it's only the past 2-3 years where they've gone off a cliff. Portugal have always been a much of a muchness team, they had absolutely no business winning the Euros, but Ronaldo dragged them to the final by sheer force of will. (Not sure which occasion, but.... Even when injured early in a game he 'dominated' from the side-lines)

I think that's another thing that separates them for me. Ronaldo seems to have this ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck single-handedly, whereas Messi does seem to need one or two others to be on his wavelength. i.e. it was always Iniesta and Xavi in the Barca heyday.
I do like Messi but ... sorry... it's without hesitation...……. RONALDO, RONALDO, RONALDO
