Kicking off on the footies thread re these two. So i thought i would start a thread for a bit. Think these two warrant there own space.
So who's the best. Would do a vote but i Dont know how to set it up.
Put me down for Messi. 👍

So hard to pick between them, but I'd probably go Ronaldo based on the fact he's maintained his incredibly high standards in England, Spain and Italy and also led his national team to major tournament success. I love Messi and he's probably the most technically gifted footballer ever, but Ronaldo's all around game and success across Europe just edges him for me.

This where I am at. Messi has been at a fantastic club all his life, surrounded by superstars and a superstar team. Could he do it at another club, in another country, under a different philosophy? We will never know with Messi, yet we know that Ronaldo definitely can. Further, Messi hasn't really done it at international level, comparing what Ronaldo and Maradona have done. Skill wise and as purist, Messi is the better, and certainly the one you would pay more to watch on a one-off basis. Overall, though, for me it is Ronaldo.

Difference at international level is ronaldo has decent defence and keeper behind him

Messi has a joke

RONALDO

He is so far a head of migit messi is does not even warrant discussion. He carries teams wins games on his own. If things aren't going well, he goes looking for the ball to sort it all out, and then does so.

You can end this thread now.

Not much in it as individuals, but football is a team sport and Messi far more of a team player so gets my vote

I actually preferred Ronaldinho to either of those 2, in his prime played with such joy, amazing player.

Of these current 2 Messi for me. Not by too much but defo Messi.

Ronaldo way ahead with his heading ability but prefer Messi with everything else. Ronaldo peaked ten years ago, lost a little pace and lost his ability to run directly at defences from deeper as he did in early years at ManU and was moved to more of a pure forward role. For me he used to go missing in a lot of big games for Manu U, for Real in classicos too. Portugal did have a good Euro's and only team of note they beat in KOs was France, he went off remember.

However football is such a team game that the media obsession with focussing on individuals doesn't work for me, just a means to sell stuff. Look at youthful Ajax last night, no superstars but looked like the home team against a tired ageing Juve side including Ronaldo. Messi for Barca last night was on easy street by comparison, lovely taken first goal too.

Ronaldo - better goal scorer
Messi - better team player

I reckon both could play in the same team

I don’t think ronaldo could handle being in a team with Messi , his ego couldn’t handle it

Guess it all depends on what criteria you use , there is no definitive set of stats etc that point to one player or the other and it’s all down to personal opinion and who you prefer

Both are the best of their generation but for me I would go for Messi

Messi for me is the better all round player , better team player , better at improving everyone around them and being part of the team. He is the one I would have in my team and the one that the managers who play in the style of Pep and Klopp would pick. Maureen for example would pick Ronaldo - he is the better striker , the one who will score more goals from all areas.

I think Messi so far is ahead in overall goals and also trophies - he has three years on Ronaldo as well so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him break all records he can

I agree that Messi will end up beating all the records. He certainly got off to a quicker start playing more forward than Ronaldo at the start of their careers. I think if you took their peak 5 years they'd be very comparable.

Right now Messi is clearly the better player. And I think even Jose would take him over Ronaldo.

Not sure i agree about Messi necessarily improving others. Think that's a bit harsh on his colleagues when you consider the Spanish midfielders he was sourounded by during peps reign.

Ronaldo I think is the more complete player and more effective. He can bang in goals with either foot, he leaps like an absolute salmon to score bullet headers, he can dominate a defender physically as well as technically. Messi is the better dribbler & passer and has the best technique we've ever seen in football, but Ronaldo just has more to his game. Also you have to say he has achieved more, as he succeeded in England, Spain, and now Italy, and has an international trophy to his name.

This is total rubbish Paul. For most of their careers Argentina were a much better side than Portugal, it's only the past 2-3 years where they've gone off a cliff. Portugal have always been a much of a muchness team, they had absolutely no business winning the Euros, but Ronaldo dragged them to the final by sheer force of will.

I think that's another thing that separates them for me. Ronaldo seems to have this ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck single-handedly, whereas Messi does seem to need one or two others to be on his wavelength. i.e. it was always Iniesta and Xavi in the Barca heyday.

Sorry but no. Look at the defensive line.. how can Messi grab a game with Romero in goal and gaberel Heinz their star defender

Look at Portugal , Pepe, carvelho. What a defensive partnership .. solid at back with a star man
