Back end of the day but Merry Christmas everyone. Hope you've all had a fab day. Highlight for me my 7 year olds face when he got his new golf clubs. Off to the course tomorrow...😊

I've written a Christmas short story. Hope you might enjoy.

The Eight Fifty-Five

Maddy settled back against the seat of the carriage and watched stragglers rush along the platform, desperate not to miss the last train to Oxford leaving Paddington on Christmas Eve. She had only made it with moments to spare and still hadn't fully relaxed.

The minute hand on the platform clock clicked to eight fifty-five and a whistle sounded. There was a harsh screeching of metal on the tracks followed by a sudden jolt as the train lurched into life before moving off slowly. As it left the shelter of the platform’s canopy Maddy could see the swirling snowflakes billowing across the glow of yellow platform lamps.

The carriage door slid open and a young Army Officer entered. He was carrying a leather suitcase and had an overcoat in the crook of his free arm. Maddy noticed the crystalline flakes of snow melting rapidly now that he was in the relative warmth of the carriage. They were turning from a translucent white to tiny black specks against the dark green of his uniform.

”Is this seat taken?” he asked, indicating the one opposite Maddy.

”No… please,” she replied.

He smiled politely to her and sat down opposite then began reading his newspaper.

The train picked up speed and Maddy peered out into the darkness but could see little except for when they passed through a station. Heavy snow was falling and she began to wonder about the weather forecast that she had heard earlier that day on the wireless. Light falls had been predicted but it seemed the forecasters had got it wrong again. Typical! She worried that the snow would interfere with the family’s post Christmas lunch stroll. A picture postcard dusting would be beautiful but anything deeper would be bothersome.

She removed a small box with gold writing inscribed on it from her handbag and opened it. The bright emerald ring inside glittered in the dim light. It was just perfect. She would wear it with her green velvet dress for the luncheon tomorrow. It was her special Christmas present to herself.

The train clattered onwards. All the while the young Officer read his paper. They made eye contact occasionally and exchanged a smile once or twice but did not engage in any real conversation. Maddy, now relaxed, sat back and closed her eyes. They would be in Oxford within the hour.

All was going well when quite unexpectedly somewhere out in the open countryside the train stopped suddenly. It didn’t move for a full ten minutes and when they set off again it was at a snail’s pace and only for a moment before grinding to a halt once again.

”Snow on the line perhaps,” suggested the Officer looking up from his paper.

”Oh dear, I do hope we are not delayed,” Maddy managed a nervous smile.

The Officer stood up and pulled the window strap down attempting to see what the matter was. Snowflakes and icy air tumbled in from outside as he leaned out into the darkness.

”I’m afraid I cannot see what’s happening, miss, it is too dark,” he said closing the window again.

The train remained motionless for another while until presently they heard voices from outside the carriage. Light from dim lanterns was suddenly visible at the window. The carriage door was opened from outside and a man who looked like the driver or perhaps a guard stood there. Only his top half was visible. He held a lantern aloft.

“I’m sorry, madam, sir, but the line ahead is impassable with snowdrifts and we must alight here and walk along the tracks back to the last station,” he told them.

”But surely we can start again soon,” Maddy protested.

”Sadly not, miss. The snow is too deep. We must alight. But please do not worry; arrangements have been made to get you all to your destination by road.”

Maddy immediately became distressed and the Officer sensing her fear said, “Please allow me to assist you miss.”

He first removed his case from the luggage rack, placed it on the trackside then reached back up into the carriage.

“Catch hold of my arms and let me to help you down.”

Maddy reached down to his up-stretched hands and he caught her below her arms placing her delicately on the ground as if she were no heavier than one of the snowflakes tumbling all around them. They were now standing on the trackside with some fifty or so passengers.

Led by the driver and his guard they slowly began to make their way along the tracks. All in single file moving hesitantly through the ever-deepening snow.

“Now we must go carefully here, for there’s a sharp drop on our right-hand side,” said the driver.

Maddy had become quite frightened by the prospect of the drop and was reluctant to cross the danger area. But once more the Officer offered her his help.

“I shall cross first and then assist your crossing. Trust me miss, I will not let you fall.”

He crossed the void and stretched back over taking her hand once more. Maddy began to cross but midway what little courage she had failed her. She felt faint and slipped. She let out a scream of terror but even as she fell she was aware that the Officer had caught her by her wrist and pulled her upwards and across the drop to safety. However the sense of relief she felt at having been saved was immediately replaced by one of intense dismay, because in the panic her handbag had fallen into the dark abyss and with it the emerald ring also. Both now gone for ever.

Brian was digging a trench for the foundations of a new electrical substation by the tracks when suddenly he saw a small box with gold writing on it half-buried in the dirt. He put down his pickaxe and started uncovering the box with his hands.

“Here Al, look what I found,” he called out to Alan who was digging alongside him.

“What you got, Bri?” asked Alan.

“A box with a ring in it. An emerald it looks like…and antique too I’d say. Been here a while judging by the state of the box. Maybe worth a few quid!”

“You were definitely born lucky you jammy sod,” laughed Alan.

Brian passed the box to his workmate to let him have a look. Alan took the ring from the box and held it up to the light. Visible for the first time since Maddy had looked at it on the train It glittered brightly as the the sun’s rays reflected in it for the first time in almost eighty years. Alan whistled softly and put the ring back on its mount in the box handing it back to Brian.

“It’s a smasher Bri, what you gonna do with it then? Hand it in to the cops”

“Are you kidding mate! That’s Kelly’s Christmas present sorted!” Brian grinned.

Very nice words slimey.

Just want to send my wishes out to everyone on the forum who has not had a great time or for whom this time of year is particularly difficult. The last few days have been some of the hardest I have had to face and before this I have never fully understood what it means to look at Xmas day with anything but good cheer.

To all those people, keep your chin up, you are not alone and with the help of family, friends and even total strangers on a golf forum things will get better and if not better, easier to handle.

Merry Xmas
