Medal & Stapleford Comps

I agree that there will be those you'd rather not play with. However in all the time I've played drawn competitions at Ascot I can think of one guy I really didn't enjoy playing with and wish I hadn't entered the competition. I don't think thats a bad return.

There are cliques at any club. We have regular greedies that go out at the same time on the same day and that is fine. However if you're a new member or looking to pick up a game it can make it very difficult. There are some that are more approachable than others and the main one I mentioned on a Saturday that roll up for the comps but draw amongst themselves are great.

However I also been at a club where you have to put your name down on the start sheet for following week and guys would be in their cars at 6 in the morning ready for 7.30 when the clubhouse opened just to get the same time every week. The same guys at the same time every week. I'm sorry but that must become so boring even if you are the best mates in the world.

For our midweek comps there are 2 draws in the summer at 6pm and 6.20pm. Most folk go for the 6pm start and groups of 3 or 4 depending on numbers are drawn at random. Our bigger comps are usually played on a saturday, the entry sheets go up a few weeks before and the draw is made by the committee. They try and mix up as much as possible eg a low, high and mid handicap player. For comps like the Club Championship and our Open the draws are seeded by handicap. I think the random draws are a good idea as you get to play with everyone at the club and this leads to a better atmosphere around the club. Also with a shotgun start the club house is always busy as most groups finish at the same time.

To be honest these are competitions, and if we (amateur golfers) want to play in competition conditions then playign with your regular partners is not adhering to these conditions.

Two sorts of golf occur at clubs.

Social and competitions (although very much adds to the social side of the clubs by ensuring as many peopel socialise during competition conditions)

Similar to a few others at our club:

Start sheet goes up 2weeks in advance.
Put your name up in a tee slot that suits you (tough luck if someone has filled your "normal" tee time)
You can play in your regular 3ball as long as you can fill a tee time that is blank.
or
Put your name(s) up as a single or a 2ball and others can fill the remaining slots in that tee time to make your 3ball up.

The course is closed to general play during all comps. The 1st tee will normall reopen @ approx 14:00 if you want to have a social game.
