As a newcommer to golf can you tell me the difference between Medal and Strokeplay as i am not sure,are they different competitions~? and do they have different rules?

Strokeplay is self explanatory, i.e. you count the number of strokes. Medal has become a little blurred down the years. Originally specific competitions were Medal comps, i.e. you won a Medal, and they were tradiditionally strokeplay. However, I have heard of some monthly Medals being Stablefords.

medal is strokeplay, and stableford is strokeplay, par and bogey competitions are also strokeplay matchplay is not strokeplay
strokeplay events are generally played against a field, matchplay events are played against an opponent, or opponents. I say generally because some '*******' events are played as medal/matchplay for convoluted reasons - but you don't need to worry about those unless invited to play in the Dunhill (if that's what it's still caled!).
all strokeplay events are played to the strokeplay rules; although their scoring may differ
matchplay events are played to matchplay rules.

The only difference at my club is , if you win the monthly medal you get a silver spoon with the clubs crest on it, sweep money plus maybe 6 provs. Over the season the player with the best 3 medal scores wins a trophy.
The other weekly s/p comps you get balls plus sweep money. except for the captains ect.

My old club had a good set up , one medal comp a month, winner gets the medal & all the medal winners play in an end of season comp aswell, was very good ..
New place doesnt do medal just 12 strokeplay events that contribute to OOM points . 50 for 1st down to 1 for 50th ,
