MD irons any good for beginner?

Does anyone have any experience with this brand? They seem to get a good review, and I also see from a few older forum posts here that people generally say positive things about them. I'm considering buying the superstrong st2 irons from a store on eBay and they would cost £130 to £140 depending on whether I went for the 5 to SW or the 4 to SW set. This seems like a reasonably good deal to me but to be honest I don't really have a clue.

They also have the icon range of irons for the same price but I don't know what the difference is between the two sets and I can't find much info on them either.

Are either of these clubs a good choice? How do they compare to stuff like the Wilson Di7s (a bit more expensive new but probably around the same price second hand). I've also had a look on golf bidder at some of the bigger names but again its more cash for clubs that have been bashed around a bit and the pull towards shiny new clubs is strong.

In case it wasn't obvious I'm a beginner and a bit clueless so any help would be good. I also appreciate its a good idea to go and try out a few but I'm not sure they places round here stock the MD stuff and I hate getting a sales pitch anyway.

Bump

Additional info I was looking to keep my budget to about 200 including a cheapish bag and probably a 3 wood (already have a putter that I think I can get along with). The idea being to maximise cash for lessons as hopefully money spent there will show greater improvement than additional money on clubs. Is this best approach? Or should I increase my budget or buy a packaged set?

Re: MD irons any good for beginner?

When I started golf I hit a bunch of stuff, ended up coming down to 2 sets of clubs Cleveland CG16's and Md superstrongs, they were £199 a set at the time and the CG's were over £300 (i then ended up with a £100 second hand set of titliest ap1's)

Good clubs for the money, but might be worth looking second hand

My buddy picked up some ping g2's 3-SW for £100, all much "better" than what you could get new at the entry level

Good attitude re: lessons.

Are you a total beginner? Do you own any clubs?

If you've never been on a golf course, then you may wish to enquire about group lessons with a local pro. They are much cheaper than 1-2-1 lessons and give you the basics. Generally, they will also give you a loan of a 7 iron to hit with.

As for buying clubs, it might be an idea to ask your pro for advice after lessons!

Thanks for the response. I began some beginner lessons (group) but some cancellations their end and personal commitments my end meant I couldn't attend the full lot. However went enough to learn ''basics'' of using the seven iron - grip, stance and something resembling a swing. So I own a cheap 7 iron I take to the driving range a couple of times a week. I've also played a couple of rounds of golf, which id describe as inconsistent.

The reason i was considering one-to-one lessons is that my schedule isn't all that flexible and its pretty unlikely that I would be able to commit to a block of lessons too far in advance. But I was pretty impressed by what the group lessons I did have.

As most people have said in the past mate, you won't go wrong with Md clubs, they produce good clubs at a decent price. My mate uses the st ones and Got them for a steal , he hits them really well and is happy with them . Good luck with what ever you choose mate. If you have a budget in mind it would be worth going somewhere and trying different ones.

Re: MD irons any good for beginner?

I bought a set of MD Superstrong Tungsten Ti irons (3-PW) about 5 years ago, along with a driver , 2 fairway woods, a 24 degree rescue and 2 wedges (52 and 56). Found a place that sold them online and got good advice from them too. Been a brilliant set of clubs; I subsequently bought a 19 degree rescue (and stopped using the 3 iron) and its been my favourite club in the bag. I would highly recommend them. I'm buying new clubs now but, sadly, my MD set is now incomplete as I accidentally left my 7 iron by the 7th green the other weeeknd, and some bugger nicked it rather than handing it in.....

Re: MD irons any good for beginner?

If you're interested, there will be a set of MD Superstrong forged irons 3 - PW going for a song in the for sale section shortly. ;)

Re: MD irons any good for beginner?

I have a set of MD Seve icon forged irons as in my sig, and I love them. They feel great when you hit then well but are still very forgiving I feel. I got them off eBay last year for around £150.

Re: MD irons any good for beginner?

Thanks for the responses/help. Good to know that the MD clubs are probably a pretty good option though. Anyone with much idea what the difference would be between the super strong st2s and the icon speed pro 2s? Would I be able to tell the difference between them?
