Matchplay vs the course

Otherwise known as a "Bogey" competition, Birdie wins the hole, Par ties the hole, Bogey loses the hole.....all after you have taken your necessary shots off. For instance, Par 5, if you get a shot and shoot a gross 6, then it's a net par and you tie the hole meaning you're all square. If you happened to get 2 shots then you'd have a net birdie and win the hole. I'd imagine if it's a 4 ball competition then it'll be the best score taken for each hole meaning that you'll probably have to have a pretty low score at the end to win.

It's based on Nett score vs Hole Par. If nett is less than par it's a win, nett = par is a half and nett > par is a loss.

Can someone explain this to me? It's also a 4 ball comp.....im a little confused!

I am also playing for handicap as have only recently joined the club.

As you are playing for handicap despite it being 4 ball better ball make sure you putt everything out! And keep another card with just your score on?

played this once without really knowing scoring rules, me and partner had 3 net eagles, and counted these as 2 under par each time, (rather than a matchplay score) therefore giving us a score 3 better than it actually was, "won" the comp, until a recount showed me and my mate to be a couple of muppets !! good format though - ours wasn't called matchplay v course though, something like par v course

We only have one bogey event. Two rounds and you can play over any of the 4 days at Easter (e.g you can choose to go out Good Friday/Easter Sunday, Saturday/Sunday etc) . Its an honours board event too

Just the one bogey comp for us to and also an honours board comp. Guess who's the current holder :D:D

Played in a gale last year and carded a 2 up score - nice to win with a 'sensible' round!

We have quite a few winter bogey comps. They are good fun. I think, especially if it is or your handicap, then it's an individual event, not a team comp!

Matts & MrGoodThingsInLife , you wouldn't be playing at Chesfield Downs this weekend would you ?

Same comp for me :)

Matts, I was talking to someone in the pro shop in the week who was playing for his handicap. Wouldn't have been you would it ?

We had one last weekend. I finished all square and came 53rd out of 108.

There were 3 x +8's, a +7, a +6 and loads of +5's and +4's.
You'd have finished 29th with 2 up (if you were best on countback!)

Yes I think it probably was me. What time are you teeing off?

How'd you guys get on. I finished 2 down.

Really stupid comp IMHO.

It was individual matchplay vs the course off 3/4 handicap. So you're giving an opponent who doesn't make mistakes shots before you even start.

I know you're playing against the field really but made scoring really negative as you were just glad to get a net par to halve the hole.:(

I probably played the best I've done in ages and shot to my handicap (first time in about 6 months) but still ended up 2 down.

Hey Westy

Agree with above re scoring format thought it should have been full rather than 3/4. Ended up 7 down but am ok with that as I am adjusting to new swing and was first round with 'new' driver. Chipping and pitching let me down but ball striking coming along nicely. Think 2 up is winning it.

Yeah, agree should have been full handicap. One of the guys we played with didn't win one hole all round !! think he finished 11-12 down.
