Yesterday Myself, two golf buddies and our club pro, Phil, played 72 holes for the Alzheimer society in Cornwall and the isles of Scilly.
We were given courtesy of the Holywell course at St Enodoc for the first two rounds and teed off at 6 AM with some light drizzle coming down for about the first half hour before the weather cleared up to be a lovely day if not a little breezy from time to time. Being first on the course was fantastic and we made quick progress.
With 8 points on the first hole it looked like it was going to be a successful day, which it turned out to be. With fast running greens that ran true putting was a dream once we got used to the speed. We finished the first round with 100 points from 2 scores counting per hole. Highlights from the first round were 47 points for Alan who plays off 24 as he played out of his skin and a superb hole in one for Phil on the 18th.

After a short break we set out on the second round that was quiet a bit slower as the course had become very busy with the good weather. Even so it was a pleasant round of golf with some good laughs along the way including Gary hitting a telegraph pole on the 6th with his approach shot and me putting out from 35 foot on the 10th for a 2. All eyes were on Alan score following his superb start in with the first round which he did with another great score of 45. We were all starting to feel a little tired and were happy to have the rest during the short drive back to our hole course and having some lunch when we got there.

We got underway again just before 2 pm and by the 5th we were all feeling the strain with some er interesting shots being played by everyone. As we teed off on the 17th my wife and kids met us and pushed the trolleys for a couple of holes before two of my kids and wife had to go. Melissa, my only non golfing daughter, stayed and pushed Gary's bag for him for the last 18 holes. Highlights of round three were pretty hard to come by but an eagle on the par 4 10th for myself and on the 17th Alan hit the wires running across the hole only for Phil to do exactly the same thing on his shot 5 yards further forward. Alan had 33 points!

A quick (cough) coffee break and we were off for the final round. We were getting our second wind and the golf improved considerably. The weather was still holding off with some sunny spells continuing but the wind had increased. On the third Phil drove the green, shame it was a provisional after pulling his tee shot onto the 8th fairway but he still made a great birdie putt. As we started on our final nine holes we were in good spirits. On the 11th I had a chip in that was foiled by the flag and the wind pushing it back out of the hole. On the 12th we were joined by last years lady captain and her son who caddied for Alan and I for the last 6 holes. A superb chip in by Phil on the 16th kept us going for the final two holes. As we came around the corner on the final hole we had a small "crowd" waiting to cheer us home. All four of us shot 36 points on the final round which is surprising considering how we were all feeling.

With around a grand raised for a great charity and a few beers and banter afterwards we had a great day. Half an hour after we finished the rain arrived!
Woke up today not knowing which part of me aches the most but I would do it again in a heartbeat. If your doing this for any charity have a great day it's a lot of fun.

We also discovered the secret to Alan's good scores, to play on a course with very few trees. He only hit two trees on the first two rounds, the same tree, on the same hole both rounds! Put a line of trees down each side of the fairway and he's had it!

Great to see that you had support from the courses too. I emailed 10 local courses including my own and spoke to secretary and haven't had one single response!

Well done mate, tough day by the sounds of it,but money raised for a worthy cause.

Myself and 3 other members of my club ( Stoneleigh Deer Park) will be taking part in the Macmillan longest day challenge next Saturday. We had to delay by a week due to prior committments.
We are planning to play 4 rounds over 4 different courses, starting at 4am and hoping to complete the last round before dark.
We have raised over £2000 so far, and hope to be nearer £5000 by this time next week.

It's really tough doing it over 4 different courses if there is anything over 5 miles between them. Last year the ones that took part played one round at Lanhydrock, one round at St Kew, then off to The Point and then back to St Kew. They finished as it was almost dark as the traveling took too much time out of the day.
If you've planned your course route well you'll be ok but if you get held up on route to any of them you'll be tight for time.
Good luck and have a great day, it's hard work but great fun.

Thanks for the pointers.
We had a team meeting thursday and tried to work out a realistic schedule, its scarey how much the weather conditions can influence how many daylight hours there are.
We plan to tee off on the first course at 4am, but that will depend on the weather, and we hope to tee off for the last round about 6pm. The courses are reasonably equally spaced apart, so no more than 3 miles between each one.Civil twilight begins at 3.57am and ends at 10.21pm, so we may have another 20+ minutes of usable daylight if the weather is good.

I did the Macmilian longest day yesterday! To say I'm aching this morning is and understatement. 3 new friends last night sudacrem, deep heat and talc!
If I was you pack these in your golf bag along with blister plasters!
We lost a lot of time yesterday due to the weather putting waterproofs on and off and of course the one the that ruins this amazing sport.....SLOW PLAY! we had a twos ball in front that refused to let us play yet the club had told everyone before hand as we made leaflets to go onto all score cards.

In the end the club told us to call them with any slow play in front and they would stop them... Which we only had to use once in the end.

Overall it was a great day starting at half 4 and finishing at 7!

Completed it on Friday. Managed to shoot the four rounds in 11 under handicap too :)

Top tips would be fresh socks each round and alternate between two pairs of shoes. Also, compression shorts help with the chaffing!

I had no problem with chaffing at all. I took half my wardrobe with me including 5 pairs of socks, two of which stayed in the bag in case I wanted to change them in the middle of a round. I had half a bloody pharmacy in the bag with a blister repair kit, painkillers ranging from paracetamol to Tramadol, Voltarol gel, wet wipes and a toilet roll. Never have a damp butt, it's the quickest way to need the Sudacrem!
I did have to have a word with my doctor as I only had knee surgery 18 months ago and he was a little concerned as the whether the knee would take it. He also sponsored me £20 so I had to finish it, don't know if that's some kind of reverse psychology I don't know but it put £20 in the kitty!
It's my lower back that is still sore, my knee, feet, neck, shoulders and thighs recovered surprisingly quickly.
Well done lads for completing it, it's not an easy day by any means!

Well done for completing the challenge, i hope the chaffing and blisters don't hurt too much. Hopefully i'm not underestimating the challenge we are undertaking for one minute (gulp).
Have spoken to a few people who have completed the longest day in the past, but all have done the challenge on one course, and my group have to add on travelling time between course's, and hope that slow groups ahead of us are courteous and allow us to play through without too much delay.
If there are any potential sponsors reading this thread, please have a look at mine or Glynns donation page and dig deep and donate as much as you can for such a worthy cause.
My team are hoping to raise £5000 for Macmillan cancer support, but we are still a little short of our target with less than a week to go before we take on the challenge.

This might sound like a strange question but do you wear pants or boxer shorts?
To help with chaffing wear tight fitting boxers, available for about £8 for 3 pairs, as they come down your legs enough to help prevent the skin rubbing which causes the chaffing.

Ooer missus lol

I will be wearing some of my wifes cut down tights and tight fitting briefs.
I did the three peaks challenge many years ago and learn't a very valuable lesson about cloth rubbing against your butt cheeks and inner thighs lol
Lanacaine at the ready just in case
