Long Par 3

I am the only one who sees something wrong with par 3 holes over 200 yards. To my mind each type of hole is set to test a particular area of your game and the focus of the par 3 should be accuracy. I feel that the 'spirit' of a good par 3 hole is missing when you are expected to hit a 3 wood or driver into it. A good par 3 to me should be a test of accruacy with a mid or short iron with the danger being around the green rather than not being able to reach it in some cases or having to show unerring accuracy with a club designed for distance and not precision.

our par 3 3rd is a long hole 198yds all uphill and 99 times out of 100 into a wind peter alliss once wrote it was one of the strongest par 3s in yorkshire

Our par 3 15th is exactly the same length, and Peter Alliss said it was one of the best par 3's in the South of England !! Plays into the prevailing wind to a raised upturned saucer of a green. Bunkers left and right are well below the green,and there is a huge tree that stops a fade into the green. A nice soft draw with a long iron or hybrid is the shot. Stroke index 10 so i get a shot again. :D :D
sounds like a tough beech of a hole . doesnt sound a very fair hole either . sounds like it set up for bogey or worse .. how do you normaly get on on that hole?/

It's a cracking hole. Just because a hole is a par 3 doesn't mean it can't be difficult. No OB on the hole, so if you do miss the green, a good short game can save you. If you are going to miss the green, short is best, no trouble, and a low chip and run up the slope will do the job. One of the bunkers short right has been taken out to allow for this type of shot.

It was the first hole i birdied when i joined the club, although i have only had a handful since. On Sunday with all the wind it was playing 3 wood.

We have five par 3's and the usually all require different clubs., ranging from a wedge to a hybrid.

a holes a hole i personally just get on & play it

cant see why ppl think "theres something wrong"

I dont see the point in that mindset (not saying its wrong just think its a negative way to look at it IMHO

or looking at any hole as though its wrong in that case)

i see it that...its just a different challenge

accuracy with longer clubs or your ability to scramble a par with ur short game

but in answer to the question
i usually consider 190+ a long one

I see nothing wrong with a long par 3. Why not test a player's accuracy with a long club. No different really from a long par 4. I do however think having 3 or 4 over 210 yards is a bit harsh!

All our par 3s are between 150 and 175. Depending on where the tee markers and pins are, and the wind, you can end up using the same club at all of them. A lot of members feel having a longer one would add to the course and there have been various thoughts over the years about moving one of the tees back.

Anything of 200 yards and up is a long par 3.
In the Universe inhabited by handicap golfers, a par 3 of 220 yards or more is just plain silly, especially if it's a medium to high SI.
You could have a nearest the green competition......

We only have two over 200 hunders yards (SI 10 - the 1st and SI 13 the 17th). The rest are 178, 139, 178 and 186. All good tests. I have no problem with long par 3's if they are designed properly. There is one at Wimbledon Common that is 240+ and tree lined on both sides and is probably about 30 yards wide so you are hitting down a chute. Granted it does play a fraction donwhill but very tight driving hole and definitely not a good par 3. However there are also plenty of short par 3's too that are a mockery (tripped up greens, nonsense bunkering etc) that are equally against the essence of what a par 3 should be.

At the end of the day you can only play what is in front of you as best you can and if you get a shot then use it if need be. Otherwise just get on with it and relish the challenge

Long Par 3's are an abonimation. A Par 3 should be testing your mid to short iron skills, and the best Par 3's do that. Trying to wallop 3W or driver at a small heavily guarded target isnt a challenge, its just a pain. Plenty of opportunities for the course designer to test your driver and fairway wood skills on the 4's and 5's, without copping out to long Par 3's.

Good call! :)

Oh, i.m.o.

short = up to 130/140
medium = 130/140 - 180/190
long = 190 or more.

Queen's Mere, one of my favourite holes.. not! It's a beast isnt it? I did drive the green one weekend on both saturday and sunday! but they are the only times ive actually landed on the thing...

Speaking of which Homer, when you up for a round back at your old ground? Who was captain when you were around?

A par three is a hole that you can reach in one, end of story in my book.
To test mid to short irons it needs to be done from varying lies and conditions, hitting off flat teeing grounds using a tee isn't the stiffest test you experience on the course.

Our third is 197 yds, bunker just infront on the left and bunker on left with OOB done the whole left side. Only made par once! At my level I should really treat it as a 4 and use my shot! The 16th is 186yds bunkers left and right with a sloping two tier green. Although doesn't play as hard as I've made it sound!! The easier of the two definatley.

If you want a REAL par 3 test, get yourselves to Luton Hoo on June 6th for the Golf Monthly Help for Heroes meet.

The 13th is a whopping 271 yds of the back tees, (which we will be playing on that hole :o :D)

Here's a write up of the course and a mention of the 13th, ( but as it's by those pu55ies over at Golf Magic, they only played it off the yellows, a mere 246 yds)........Only kidding btw, the Golf Magic crowd are a good bunch....well apart from their ringleader, some knob called Smifster apparently... :D :D :D :D

Let's see if I describe a par 3 I played yesterday; 250 yards to an, all but, blind green, (but if you can see it as you play your shot you are in big trouble)
immediately in front of an elevated tee the ground falls away steeply to a stream only to rise equally steeply to the crest of a domed hill, actually the end of a ridge. The further side of the hill falls again steeply to the green.

your tee shot must bisect a narrow gap framed by trees, aimed at marker post. go right and if you clear the sentinel on that side, you are into a further grove of trees, if you go left - well just don't.

sounds reasonably simple? get it up close and chip/pitch it on - well maybe - if the green didn't slope away from you.

Barney Abberton was captain the year I joined as a junior I think. Brian Cox (ex secretary) was captain when I rejoined. I could be up for a game July time if you fancy it including a weekend
