Long Par 3

Winterfield golf club Dunbar.
1st 238yds over gully, you have to carry 220 or down you go. Sea all along the left side.

8th 250 yds, say no more.

9th 236 yds with OOB wall on the right side and back of green.

10th 212yds OOB all down the left side.

11th 197 yds…you cant go left.

14th 202yds sea tight on the left and round the green.

15th 234yds sea all down the left edge.

All par threes and all on the one track. Shame about the other holes.

This is something me and a fellow member were discussin on the range last night.

Our course has 3, Par 3's at 230+ and we were just discussing how long they were.

it would be interesting if you could name the stroke index as well ie I've seen long easy par 3's with stroke index 14 and a 120yd par 3 that was stroke index 6 (Water in front, surrounded by bunkers, tiny sloping green etc)

I'll give you a few examples:

2nd: 194 Yards par 3 SI 11
9th: 234 Yards Par 3 SI 4
10th: 234 Yards Par 3 SI 2
11th: 233 Yards Par 3 SI 5

I played a par 3 last year, that we couldn't see the green from the tee box. Now thats what I call a par 3.

Mount Ober Golf club Belfast.

There are two par 3s @ Painswick GC that are about 120yds and neither green canbe seen from the tee, two terrible holes.

Anything you have to hit at least a 5 iron to on a calm day would fit in as long with me.

our par 3 3rd is a long hole 198yds all uphill and 99 times out of 100 into a wind peter alliss once wrote it was one of the strongest par 3s in yorkshire

Our par 3 15th is exactly the same length, and Peter Alliss said it was one of the best par 3's in the South of England !! Plays into the prevailing wind to a raised upturned saucer of a green. Bunkers left and right are well below the green, and there is a huge tree that stops a fade into the green. A nice soft draw with a long iron or hybrid is the shot. Stroke index 10 so i get a shot again. :D :D

I am the only one who sees something wrong with par 3 holes over 200 yards. To my mind each type of hole is set to test a particular area of your game and the focus of the par 3 should be accuracy. I feel that the 'spirit' of a good par 3 hole is missing when you are expected to hit a 3 wood or driver into it. A good par 3 to me should be a test of accruacy with a mid or short iron with the danger being around the green rather than not being able to reach it in some cases or having to show unerring accuracy with a club designed for distance and not precision.
