Just been on the wilson site only to find out that the PW on the DI9's has 42.5 degrees of loft, no wonder they claim that these irons go the longest out of any set.
So what is the lowest amount of loft have you ever seen on a PW?
Thats certainly the lowest i have ever seen!!!!

I let rip about these a few months back and think the only way to stop manufacturers de-lofting clubs is by puting the loft on the iron and not a number. Wilson are probably the bggest culprits and I wish they would be told to stop this by trading standards.

I also think that this is why new sets start from 4 or 5 iron because a 3 iron would have a loft similar to an old 1 or 2 iron.

Outrageous. I've just had mine de-lofted to 47.....

I really think it is time to re-number or just have the lofts on irons.

My old, old set of Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scotts, had both the number and loft. 48 = PW 44 = 9I 40 = 8I and so on.

It's getting silly.....

Below is a post I made earlier this year. Things are just getting worse then. It's outrageous.

Been reading a book on golf published in 1988 by Bernard Gallacher and Mark Wilson. Covered in a chapter is golf club make up, illustrated with bound on persimmon heads and irons with lofts included.

The 14 club line up is as follows.

Driver - 11
No3 - 14
No4 - 19
No5 - 23
3 - 23
4 - 27
5 - 31
6 - 35
7 - 39
8 - 43
9 - 47
PW - 52
SW - 58
Putter

Now comparing that to my 'modern' set up.

Driver - 12.5
Rescue - 17
Rescue - 20
3 - 20 (don't use)
4 - 23
5 - 26
6 - 30
7 - 34
8 - 38
9 - 42
PW - 46
GW - 52
SW - 55
LW - 60
Putter

You've probably guessed where I'm going with this now!

So we still carry 14 clubs in the bag, but how do the manufactuers get us to buy more clubs, easy, close up the degree gaps in the irons, therefore meaning that we need more clubs to get to where the PW used to be, ie by buying a GW!

Also. Ever wondered why you hit a 7 iron further than you used to. Well there's your answer! It's in the loft angle!

For those of you that question the need for 3 or 4 wedges, again the answer is quite clear!

I thought it made an interesting comparison.

Yes.....that's why I don't bother with a 3 or 4 iron, hence a new set without.

I had my C/F set double checked the other day (at crazy cost, if you ask me, but I did want a second opinion).

He set them to.
PW 47 (I asked for this, it was 46)
9i 42, 8i 38, 7i 34, 6i 31, 5i 28

The lofts were spot on but the lies were pretty second-rate for a C/F set. I can't be arsed to take it up with the shop that sold them to me, I can hardly drive 60 miles round trip and throw my toys out the pram for 1/2 a degree here or there. Lies are perfect.....and it feels GOOD.....

Yep 100% agree with you all, I loved my Di7 but did get annoyed with the lofts. My MX200 PW is 45* I know not a massive difference but I like them.

Do you have a 52 GW?

I had my PW (MX-900) bent to 47 so I go 42/47/52....

Is there a noticeable distance gap between your PW and GW?

my PW is lofted 44.5, which is strong i know but certainly not as strong as the DI9's, and whats better they make the AW that is still in the range of a normal PW, it's 46 degrees, i do think that manufacturers are taking this "distance" thing a bit too far.

My G10 PW is a 46.

Checked ping site.

i10 - 46
V2 - 45
S57 - 47
G5 - 46
Rhapsody - 46

From a Ping angle they are pretty close. I guess there is probably a +/- 1 deg tolerance during manufacture as well.

Still have a difference in differences, took me ages to learn how to choke down on my PW to compensate. I love having two wedges, makes it so much easier and I certainly aint Phil M with them.

My TM tour burner PW is 46 and I carry a 52 and 58 to get a decent and constant gap. I'm learning to love my 52 in particular from 80 yards in and around the 58 is perfect for bunkers and high chips over hazards.

Is there an easy way to measure the loft of a club? Mine are pretty old really and I can't find anywhere online that says what they are. I guess a pro could measure them for me.

44.5 PW on mine, no bif deal just have a 50* GW.

The problem with having lofts rather than numbers is that it over complicates for beginners and the likes and its easier to say "7i is needed" rather than a 35* to a noob.

I used degrees on my driver to hybrid and GW-LB and see no need to degree every club.
