Local Authority Elections

I have. But I find the process flawed.

You have 3 votes, an most parties have 3 candidates. In most wards the results within a party are alphabetically.
Candidate Adams always* has more votes than candidate Jones from the same party who has more than candidate Smith who is also in that party.
If you don't 'sweep' a ward than the alphabetically disadvantaged candidate never gets a foot it.

* last time always was in all but one ward in the council I live in. For every party, even the ones not putting a councillor up at the end.

Looks like the Tories are picking up the UKIP vote which is hardly surprising.
Labour not making much ground which is also hardly surprising.
Greens taking the protest vote.

And the lib dems who have had a good night, what's the reason behind that ?

Centre ground politics makes sense for many. The kicking LDs took from their own support in 2015 for going into coalition with Tories 2010-15 may start to wear off as people drift back to them, they remain a low profile party these days though. Cable just isn't getting heard.
Looking at the local election numbers so far (99 of 150 in) in actual councillors Labour and Lib Dem gains match UKIP losses. Tories holding steady as they were. Labour up but not in key target areas.

Think May will be relieved.

Should UKIP just wind the party up now?

Unfortunately not, I moved boroughs in November last year and it seems the council have screwed up my electoral roll application and not got me and the Mrs registered properly.

Seems bad news this morning, Tories are reigning which is a real shame.

No vote here. But who cares? Deep Blue here no chance of changing things EVER. Our council is full of OLD people who have no idea what the young want and waste literally MILLIONS of pounds of our money each year!!!!!

I went and voted. Didn't have a flipping clue what or who I was voting for though. Just five random names with their parties written alongside. I couldn't find a single bit of info about what each of them have pledged - there really needs to be a website with this sort of info. In the end all I found was a thing with their addresses on, only two of the five actually live in the area they're meant to be representing so I voted for one of them. It was the Labour chap. (Other guy who lived there was the Lib Dem.)

As good as method as any... I know two of the people I voted for and my third choice lives in the next street along from mine... At least they should be aware of local needs...

Well that was my thinking. If they actually live in the area they represent you'd like to think they actually care about making the place decent. I suspect the ones that don't, just stood anywhere where they thought they could be elected to try and advance their careers.

It's not gone well for Labour. The Corbynistas who the Labour party put in front of the cameras are so desperately unconvincing. Abbott - we've done that one. McDonnell - let's spend and spend some more. Rayner the uneducated shadow Education Secretary.Thornberry, the epitome of the champagne socialist.Ashworth and Gwynne who always seem to be trying too hard. I know it's not fair but you have got to look and sound the part and these just don't.
Labour don't need to appeal to the left - they are all in Momentum. They need to get back to attracting more of the moderately left leaning voter. Corbyn is an electoral liability but by packing his shadow cabinet with his acolytes he is further damaging his party's chances. Replacing Abbott with Yvette Cooper would be a start.

Didn't have a vote this time - Surrey CC elections were last year. I voted for an independent Farnham Residents candidate - he was one of two who got elected - other being the Conservative.

Am I missing something but looking at the results as a whole it seems to have gone better for Labour than anyone else ? More gains and now more council seats ?

Yes voted last night, took Minnie Me with me as mum was working late last night. Voted Conservative; however, independent was voted in. Good news all in all - Conservatives gained majority in Basildon Council.

An opposition party should expect to do well at a time when the Government is unpopular but Labour could not capitalise on this.

If not able to win in targets like Swindon, Wandsworth and Nuneaton then the outlook for Labour is not exactly ŕosy.
