I'm going for a round next week with a client of mine that hasn't played a links course before. He's a decent golfer and hits it well. Where's a good course round the North West (England) that doesn't require a mortgage? Had a look at Royal Lytham but that's not going to happen. £84 million for a fourball (or something like that).
 
You don't say what your budget actually is but just down the road from Royal Lytham is St Annes Old Links. Half the price and a great course, a "proper" links and Open qualifying course. Probably the same price bracket as most of the Southport coast courses which are also all great tracks.

At the cheaper end there is Fleetwood which again is another true links but not in the same bracket hence the price. Great greens and good value though.
