Links vs Parkland

Thanks for the responses so far guys.

I think there is a pretty even divide.

My next question is which type of course produces the better golfer???

Has to be Links for me.

There is something about looking across a links course and seeing it all laid out before you. Dodgy lies, indifferent bounces into bunkers that you previously never thought were in play and exposure to the wind/elements just add to the enjoyment. Don't quite know why that should be but it does.

However variety is indeed the spice of life and I would not want to play entirely on a links. There are some beautiful parkland and heathland courses out there.

Define better?

The 2 are so far removed that shots played on one type would be useless on the other.
Which is better - a 60 yard chip'n'run with a 5 iron or a 30 yard flop shot over a bunker - both to a foot of the hole?

Both as good as each other - just different.

Sorry

Not Better, probably worded wrong, what seperates the different golfers techniques on each course. the types of shots they play the way they play them.

So, because you prefer links golf, you think links golfers are better. An authority on all golfers are you? I think not.

Woooooow Golfmmad....calm down!

I believe that they have more shots in their lockers because they HAVE to.....tell me where I said that makes them BETTER players please....

If you have more shots in the locker, it usually means you're a better player. I really don't see how anyone can distinguish between the two. Just as different shots are needed for links, it's the same for parkland with all the hazards to contend with.

Sorry if my previous post sounded agressive, it wasn't meant to be.

I think a good links player has pretty much the same shots at his disposal as a good parkland/heathland player. Wherever you're playing there will be times when you have to hit the ball low or high. Drawing and fading are needed on both, the ability to hit fairways etc etc etc.
A good player will know the effect of the wind or the contours around a green and will be able to adapt his shot to meet the circumstances.

I think it is easier for a low handicapper to keep there handicap at a links course due to the higher CSS most weeks, correct me if i am wrong screwback.

In the area that myself, dodger and IM02 play in we have handicaps that without being big headed if we played at the parkland course up the road and the ones down the road especially south northumberland based courses we could easily take 1 maybe 2 of our handicaps and i was just asking the question to see if it was the same everywhere or not!!!

If the CSS is higher on any given course it is because the course has played tough on any given day...happens at all courses.

We had a guy came to our place 5/6 years back from the local pitch n putt, sorry local field club which is parkland,he played off 2....after a year of playing at Goswick he had done next to nowt and crept up to 3 and left...he went back to the club which invariably has its CSS under the normal one and now is off Scr....why? cos it is an easy course, you never hit more than wedge for the 2nd shot as opposed to being tested through the bag at Goswick.

Now don't get me wrong he is a good player but he openly admits he couldn't hold downt that handicap at our track so that kinda blows your theory out of the water bunkered. ;)

Edited to say I didn't have knowledge of Screwbacks post before me!

Hold on Dodger dont get your knickers in a twist, i know you can play a bit. Mr Terras told me that. This was a comment a leading amateur player up in Scotland made last year i think he plays of plus 5.

Point taken and accepted Dodger but one example doesn't blow a theory anywhere.
All that really proves is that the track down the road from you is easy compared to Goswick.

Bunkered thinks it is easier for a low handicapper to keep their handicap at a links course due to the higher CSS most weeks.....if a links course has a higher CSS most weeks it means that I have to play well better than normal to stop going up .1....the CSS has gone up for a reason, the course is playing tough!

Likewise if it goes down on a parkland it is cos the course is playing easier so to me that means I have better chance coming down cos I'm going to shoot lower!

Sorry guys utter piffle bunkereds and some un named plus 5 players 'claim'.It is swing and roundabouts, this will happen everywhere!

Not anymore Bunkered he turned Pro not long ago. The guy has some game i remember last season when he was an Am he shot 67 or 68 when the CSS was 76 at Carnoustie.
