Links Golf

No need to worry on that score Smiffy!! I'm just standing up for my partner as any good teammate would. I happen to think if he went back to Lydd (god forbid) or Princes he'd score much better as he seems to have developed a better golfing brain from the hit it and hope guy who played it first time around. I'm confident his trust 4 iron will see him right on Sunday. Oh and btw he's gone back up to 16!!!!!
 
Links is a totally different challenge to parkland--every golfer should try and play a few links every year. It tests your shot making and asks questions of your game.

Im sure I will enjoy Links one day, but at the moment its not for me. I walked with the Mrs and the dogs around Wentworth tonight, now that is how a Golf course should look and play.

Yep im back to 16 after 33 + 35 points last weekend, on 15.7, not good. Had an hours putting lesson this AM that went well, then played two balls around the front 9, shot +2 for one and +3 for the other which was nice. All I gotta do now is produce that form in some club comps.

I know that Norman and I are taking on you and Hywel in a betterball, but as you and I are off identical handicaps we could also have a little game going between ourselves for a fiver off scratch.

It will give me a realistic chance to keep my losses down

I played on inland courses for 10 years before I played Princes and have been lucky enough to play the neighbouring courses of Deal and Royal St Georges.

You really are missing out if you never play a good links course. The wind is always the key consideration. It makes you think like no other form of golf. A par 5 may be a drive and a 7 iron one day and a drive, 3 wood, 5 wood another. The wind can even be a consideration when you're putting.

You seldom aim straight down the centre of the fairway, you're always looking for aiming points on the horizon, and those points can vary by as much as 60 degrees depending from where the wind is coming.

Playing well on a links course can be far more demanding but give you a far greater feeling of satisfaction than playing any other type of course.
 
I hear what you're saying MattysDad but I can get all this from the courses I play here. The wind can be an enormous hazard as the terrain is fairly flat. Sometimes I have to play different shots to get close to the pin - its not all lob wedge from 60 yards. We have a par 5. Some days its a driver 7 iron as you say, the other day it was driver , 3 wood, wedge so all the things that "constitute" links golf is available to me here.

Still don't get it. But I'm going to make a plan to play a decent links course sometime soon. And if I hate it I'll blame you lot!!
 
I'll have to think about that one SMiffy and may see how I'm playing in the medal on Saturday before committing. I am quite pleased with Hywel being on my side as I know from watching him play metronomic golf at the Downshire in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the day in the Longest Day challenge (something like 38 and 39 points repsectively) and chipping in from everywhere, 200 yard four irons are very hard to play against.

He can be streaky but has improved his thinking now and so will often look at a more sensible option when in trouble as opposed to the glory shots he has played in the past. I'm hoping his hot streak lasts one more weekend!
