Lifespan of irons

For handicap golfers, they won't except the grips and perhaps the shafts rusting and pitting if they aren't looked after. The heads won't. I saw an 8 iron in Faldo's bag way back in the 80's with a smooth circle the size to an old 5p that he'd worn out
 
there are a number of factors at play, each with different issues. As others have said, if the head is a cast one and made from some of the harder materials - it's unlikely that this will wear out first - given the strike patterns of most club golfers. The shaft may well suffer from fatigue after some years, depending on how well the clubs are looked after and whether they wear in the bag. Given that technology is being advanced on a regular basis, taking advantage of this to gain whatever improvement is there to be had could well be the main driver for change.
 
On irons, to the point you would change because of it, no. They are just gutters.
