Lessons?

How quickly would you expect to improve?

I have been off 14 for 3 years, since joining my golf club. I have had a lesson nearly every month since Jan 2009, and still play off 14.

Swing seems better, but shouldn’t I be a pro by now?

I'd be interested to know what kind of things the pro has told you...if you can remember any of it?

if you wanna get a better golf swing take lessons

if you wanna get better at golf practice the short game

How true. :)

t.b.h. I don't think many people know how to turn lessons into improvement.....

My driving is the biggest let down and is a culmination of losing my tempo (and hitting an old fashioned yahoo) and sometimes letting myself get booged down with swing thoughts especially if I'm having a good driving round.

Homer, me old mate, it's definitely your head that's wrong if you have too many swing thoughts on a good day. Just go with the flow - the time to worry is when it isn't working (as I know only too well!) and even then trying to fix things in the middle of a round is a recipe for disaster.

still it's easier for me, I expect to cock one or two up so when it goes right I really enjoy it. (hit some magic approaches at Ashridge - drawing over bunkers, between bunkers with everything from the 5 down to 9. best thing was they went where I wanted them to - which is a first!)

but explain to me how we are all stars during a lesson but put us on a track and it might never have been. (rasserfrassing bunkers!)

Steve,

The problem isn't the head initially. I had a great driving round on the front nine in a vey strong wind and went out in +7 with a triple at the 3rd!. Suddenly from nowhere I began really lashing at the ball with conscious thought about having to swing harder/quicker. Once I went right I couldn't help but think it was my tempo. When the one at 14 went so far right it cleared 13 I couldn't help but wonder if it was timing, hip slide, overswing or a mulititude of other swing ailments.

I'm not consciously going out with any swing thoughts at all this season. It's one of the things I'm really working on. I've been playing the front nine quite tidiliy (as HTL will concur) but then suddenly I reach the turn and the wheels start to come off, I hit a few loose ones and wham I'm back into worrying and not trusting.

As a fellow 'practice addict' i know where you're coming from Homer, all of a sudden you start questioning yourself mid-round and then you're on a slippery slope.
Your mind sounds incredibly active when something goes wrong....following a few of the 'mind' authors, you need to quieten the mind down, less chatter inside and the body should relax with the mind following, enabling you to once again trust your swing, and as you've done the hours of practice beforehand there's no reason not to trust it!!!!

Sounds easy doesn't it!!!!

I do trust the swing 100% more than I did before the work on tempo, posture and turn. I can even handle a rogue drive or two but on Sunday the one at 10 was way right (further right than the one I'd hit with HTL the day before) and once I hit another at 12 (hooked at 13) and a huge great one at 14 it was hard to stop the voices and still trust.

The mind is a lot more quiet and some of the voices in my head have gone. I find they tend to come back after nine holes especially if I'm doing ok and its still a work in progress. I have some sessions planned with a sports psychologist as part of the blog and so I'm hoping a one on one session (as opposed to reading Rotella etc) will provide some tricks to use on the course

Not sure if this is of any use, but....

If I am playing well, or in a comp, and hit a bad one off the tee with driver, I then leave it alone and hit 3 wood or iron from the tee. I have found it has worked really well this winter, hoping I can continue it through the summer off the back tee!
