Lessons, a golfing sin?

In my very early golf days i played with two ex captains in a comp. I played a shot and they queried my swing and told them that i was doing what the Pro taught me in a recent lesson. One said quite proudly (and in a snobby way) that he'd never had a lesson in his life and the other said he hadnt either, i just said "i thought not" and carried on

Dont take any notice Nick

The badge of honour of having never taken a lesson in your life seems to be very big with a lot of golfers I have met

Most have been mid teen handicappers playing crap golf for 20 years

Having a lesson is a sin...

Unless you practice what was preached..

If you don't, you're wasting your time...
(Imurg, never had a lesson and been in single figures for 20 years)😙

So many people feel that they will go backwards before improving so don't go for lessons. Others only resort to lessons when they have a specific problem- they then sort that out and continue without lessons, until they have another problem.

I feel that lessons give a basic idea that allows you to sort out most problems yourself. You know what has gone wrong.

I would hate to be in the dark about how my swing should work even if I cannot get it to be perfect. At least I can keep trying.

how far do you think you would have got without lessons Martin ,h/cap wise.

No idea. My swing has had flaws from the start. I got down to single figures, albeit on a course where the handicap never really travelled in the 80's but was playing every day and hitting loads of balls and working on the short game. When I got back into it in my thirties after a decade off, these flaws manifested even more and so have felt I needed lessons. Whether that was the right choice is debatable but I've enjoyed my golf, my lessons, working on my game and still think I can get to single figures again. Certainly wouldn't be for a lack of trying

I don't think anyone can deny the commitment to your quest Martin, and if others aren't ,I am pulling for you and really hope you make it .I was on the same path as yourself before my injury which it seems has put me two years behind ,and I'm not getting any younger.
before the accident I shot a sub par gross round ,albeit only nine holes [my course is only a nine holer] the week before it happened so was looking good for a cut ,now I would be lucky to shoot to a 24 h/cap.i was 13.9

I can see why people may say he was joking based on words alone but trust me he definitely wasn't, I like golf banter and I can tell when things are a joke even when there pretty raw. This was definitely not banter and he actually looked pissed off!

Cheers for the vote of confidence. Aside from man flu, not ideal for the comp tomorrow I'm getting close to health or as near as I will now I've hit 50 so while 2016 was a write off for me, I'm excited about the year to come. I've had a swing MOT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcdHkPN1Hz8) which highlighted a takeaway issue, and a need for more rotation, but have several others in the pipeline so once the season starts I hope to hit the ground running. We'll see though. Here's hoping

Watched you lesson homer. You seem to be getting a little hung up on the backswing. Its the downwind where you really get in trouble.

The pro is telling you that you need more rotation and it is killing you. You are spinning your shoulders open really quickly and it is throwing the club way outside hitting out to in. Freeze frame your swing at impact.

Here is you pro.
